QUESTION:
Why does the error message "insufficient memory" appear when starting COM packages on PG with STEP 5 V7.1?

ANSWER:
If COM packages are launched in STEP 5, an error message may appear. The messages are various. It depends on which COM package you start, e. g. the messages state "insufficient memory", "no free memory" etc.

  1. Click "Start" in Windows and then "Run...".
  2. Enter command SYSEDIT at the prompt.
  3. Now click "OK" ,then the system configuration editor will be started.
  4. Place file "CONFIG.SYS" in the foreground.
  5. The line DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\EMM386.EXE NOEMS must now be adapted specifically to the PG:

    PG720-PII:
    DEVICE=C:\Windows\EMM386.EXE NOEMS X=A000-BFFF X=C000-CAFF I=CB00-EAFF
    Files=32

    PG740-PII / PIII:
    DEVICE=C:\Windows\EMM386.EXE NOEMS I=B000-B7FF I=CE00-DFFF
    Files=32

    PG760-PII:
    DEVICE=C:\Windows\EMM386.EXE NOEMS I=B000-B7FF I=C800-DFFF
    Files=32

    The value Files=32 is a minimum, it may be greater but not smaller.
  6. Now save the modifications in the CONFIG.SYS.
  7. Then put the file SYSTEM.INI on the foreground of the configuration editor
  8. Scroll downward to topic [386Enh].
  9. Insert a blank line below [386Enh]. In this blank line the following must be entered:

    [386Enh]
    LocalLoadHigh=true
  10. Save these modifications and terminate the configuration editor
  11. Now restart Windows in order for changes to take effect.
