Firmware Version V4.1 released for S7-1200 CPUs

Firmware Version V4.1 for S7-1200 CPUs is herewith released for delivery.
  • Existing S7-1200 CPUs V4.0 in the field can be updated using a firmware download.
  • New CPUs will be delivered with the new firmware as from end of January 2015.


Firmware V4.1 provides functional enhancements for S7-1200 CPUs with hardware generation V4.

New features of version V4.1

·      Performance improvement

o   Performance improvement of instruction processing –
resulting in faster processing of the control program

o   Increased work memory
resulting in more resources for program and user data

·   Failsafe applications

Expansion of the portfolio with failsafe S7-1200 CPUs and signal modules (SM) for the implementation of safety-related machines and plants

·   Station web server

central access via the IP-address of selected (communication processor) modules in a local rack, as well as via the IP-address of the S7‑1200 CPU.

·      Support of additional drive versions in Motion Control

o    Position-controlled operation

o    Support of analog and

o   ….PROFIdrive drives


·   Controller block PID-Temp

Temperature controller for active heating and cooling in a process

·      Interval measurements with high-speed counters (HSC)

o    Capturing of counting events in a measuring interval or

o    Determination of the time between counting events

·   Dynamic copy protection for program blocks with obligatory password

Automatic recognition and application of a target series number during the download to CPU or memory card for protection of the user know-how.

·      Shared I-Device

o    Access of up to 2 controllers to S7-1200 as I-Device

o    Fast data exchange in real time between S7-1x00 CPUs

o    Integration of 3rd party controllers under PROFINET

·   Configuration control (Options handling)

The hardware configuration can be built for the maximum configuration of the controller, even if certain modules are currently not used. Modules which have been configured, but are not plugged in, cause no error messages.

·  Simulation of S7‑1200 CPUs with firmware version V4.0 and higher:

Using S7‑PLCSIM V13 SP1, the PLC programs can be tested on a simulated PLC, without requiring the hardware.

A SIMATIC Memory Card can be used optionally for expanding the CPU load memory, loading the application software or for executing a firmware update.

Compatibility of the hardware and software

Existing SIMATIC S7-1200 CPUs V4 (Article No. 6ES721x-1xx40-0XB0) can be updated to the new CPU firmware 4.1.

A S7-1200 CPU with version 4.1 is replacement compatible with a S7-1200 and firmware version 4.0
