How do you enable the FTP server of the Windows operating system as data provider for SIMATIC B.Data?

The B.Data Acquisition can process data files in different formats. For this you must make the files available to the Acquisition. You can use FTP to transfer the data from any PC to the B.Data Acquisition. This entry describes how to enable and configure the FTP server intrinsic to the operating system.

Requirements
In B.Data you have configured data acquisition via the "FTP" interface or you do the configuration after enabling the FTP server. See the B.Data manual "B.Data V6.0 SP1 - Operation > Configure master data > Configure data acquisition > Configure interfaces for the data acquisition > Configure data acquisition via the "FTP" interface.

Procedure with Windows 7 or Windows 8.1

  1. Open the Control Panel.
  2. Open the settings for "Programs and Functions".
  3. In the left area of the window you select "Enable/Disable Windows Function".
  4. Navigate to "Internet Information Services > FTP Server".
  5. Enable the two options "FTP Service" und "FTP Expandability".
  6. Navigate to "Internet Information Services > Web Management Tools".
  7. Enable the option "IIS Management Console".
  8. Confirm with "OK".

Your operating system is updated. The FTP Server function is then available to you.

Procedure with Windows Server 2012

  1. Open the Control Panel.
  2. Open the settings for "Programs and Functions".
  3. In the left area of the window you select "Enable/Disable Windows Function".
  4. Navigate in the menu bar to "Management > Add new roles and functions".
    The "Add new roles and functions" wizard opens.
  5. In the first step of the wizard you select "Next".
  6. In the "Installation type" step you select the option best for your server configuration and click "Next".
  7. In the "Server selection" step you select your server and click "Next".
  8. In the "Server role" step you select the option "Web server (IIS)". Click "Next".
    Confirm the next step with "Add functions".
  9. In the "Functions" step you do not have to select any further options. Click "Next".
  10. Remember the displayed notes and confirm them with "Next".
  11. In the "Web server roles (IIS)" you select the option "FTP Server" with the subordinate options "FTP Service" and "FTP Expandability".
  12. Enable the option "IIS Management Console" under "Web Management Tools".
  13. Select the option "If necessary automatically restart the target server" if your server applications permit this.
  14. Click Install.
  15. A summary is displayed if the installation is successful. Close the window with "Close".

Settings for the FTP Server under Windows 7/8.1 and Windows Server 2012
The configuration is identical for Windows 7/8.1 and Windows Server 2012.

  1. Start the "Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager".
    (For example via the search field of your operating system using the search term "Internet Information".)
  2. Mark "Sites" in the tree.
  3. In the right part of the window you click "FTP Site".
  4. Assign an FTP name.
    (The name will be needed later. In the FAQ response the name is "BData_FTP".)
  5. Under "Physical path" you select the path to the preconfigured B.Data FTP directories. Click "Next".
  6. Leave the presettings under "Link".
  7. If there are certificates for the SSL encryption, you can specify these as "required" or "allowed". (Otherwise you select "No SSL".) Click "Next".
  8. Select your required "Authentication" ("Anonymous" or "Standard").
  9. Under "Authorization > Permit access for:" you select single users or user groups who are to be allowed to access your FTP server.
  10. Under "Permissions" you assign "Read" and "Write" rights.
  11. Close the dialog with "Finish".

Note
Depending on the "Authentication" selection you must assign permissions for the user or user groups.

  • In the tree you mark the newly created FTP Site. In this FAQ response the name is "BData_FTP".
  • In the right area under "Actions" you click "Edit permissions".
    The "Properties of FTP" dialog opens.
  • In the "Security" tab you click your users or user groups and then "Edit". Assign the rights for your user or user groups.
