Product phase-out of the MOBY U identification system

  • Entry
  • Associated product(s)

The MOBY U identification system will no longer be actively marketed as of 1 October 2015 and should no longer be used for new plants. The discontinuation of MOBY U is scheduled for 1 October 2016. After discontinuation, it will only be possible to order MOBY U products as spare parts.

Successor system

Projects that have been implemented with MOBY U to date should now primarily be implemented with the SIMATIC RF600 system. A check should also be conducted to determine whether the required read range is also sufficient for an HF identification system (RF200/RF300). Below you will find an explanation of some of the key features of MOBY U and RF600:

  • The read ranges of MOBY U can be covered with RF600 without any problems in most cases.
  • The transponder portfolio for RF600 is much greater than for MOBY U. This means that there are completely new options for mounting and handling the transponders with RF600.
  • The reading speed of RF600 is comparable to MOBY U.
  • The memory capacity of RF600 is currently less than for MOBY U. Today, RF600 only offers transponders with up to 3,424 bytes, while MOBY U offered memories with up to 32,768 bytes.
  • In terms of system integration, RF600 offers the advantage of an integrated Profinet/Ethernet interface. The previous function block FB 45 for MOBY U will be replaced by the Ident profile for RF600. The Ident profile is already integrated in the system library of the TIA Portal and offers blocks that can be handled very easily.
  • The parameter assignment which was exclusively set with the FB 45 for MOBY U is implemented by modern Web-based management (WBM) for RF600. Each read point can be diagnosed and modified without any additional aids with WBM. MOBY U required an auxiliary program to do this which could be used by qualified personnel through the second connector of the SLG.
