How do unmanaged IE switches behave with regard to LLDP messages for topology identification?

It is important to know the actual topology of a plant for diagnostics and maintenance. The topology identification is done through LLDP messages that are sent independently by PROFINET IO devices.

Unmanaged IE switches do not send LLDP messages themselves and block those from their partners. However, there are exceptions.

Table 1 shows the behavior of unmanaged IE switches.

All unmanaged IE switches that forward LLDP messages may not be included in the topology identification of STEP 7. According to the configuration these are available, but because they forward the LLDP messages they are transparent for the partners. This causes a topology error.
In SINEMA Server unmanaged IE switches are not recognized automatically. If you use unmanaged IE switches, it might happen that when determining the topology in SINEMA Server, the topology does not recognize all the connections or possibly incorrect connections. In the processing mode, a reference topology can be configured based on the topology determined by SINEMA Server and this then represents the setpoint status of the network. This setpoint status is the basis for monitoring the network in Online mode and in view-specific topology displays. Entry 109746780 includes information about the underlying functions and setting options of SINEMA Server.

Remedy

  • The SCALANCE X-000, SCALANCE XB-000 and SCALANCE X-100, that forward LLDP messages, as well as SCALANCE X-101 media converters may not be included in the topology in the STEP 7 project. This means that you do not use the topology or you do not interconnect the unmanaged switches in the topology.
  • It is recommended to use managed IE switches for better and extended diagnostics of the network.

Note

Unmanaged IE Switches cannot be used in PROFINET networks for the function "Device replacement without exchangeable medium". Entry ID 36752540 includes a list of the devices that support "Device replacement without exchangeable medium".
