How do you install a GSD file and which GSD file version is released for which version of STEP 7 (TIA Portal)?

  • Entry
  • Associated product(s)
In order to configure the devices (PROFINET, PROFIBUS) of a manufacturer in the device configuration of STEP 7 (TIA Portal), you have to install the GSD file beforehand.

You normally only use GSD files to integrate standards-compliant third-party devices into STEP 7 (TIA Portal). These text files contain the specific properties of the field device.
GSDML files are provided in the GSDML language (GSD Markup Language) – an XML-based language.

Siemens devices
However, if you need modules from Siemens that are not included in the hardware catalog of your version of STEP 7 (TIA Portal), then you have to update your hardware catalog with the corresponding HSPs (Hardware Support Packages).
If no HSP is available, you install the GSD file for your module.
Information on the HSPs is available here:
Support Packages for the Hardware Catalog in the TIA Portal (HSP).

Install GSD files
You can install the GSD file in STEP 7 (TIA Portal) with the project open or not. Normally it is an XML file and picture file that you need for configuring the device in the device configuration.

  1. Extract the ZIP file of the device manufacturer into a separate directory on your hard disk.
  2. Open STEP 7 (TIA Portal) in the Project view and in the toolbar you select the menu command "Options > Manage general station description files (GSD)".
  3. In the "Manage general station description files" dialog the set source path is the one from which the last GSD file was installed. Via the "[...]" button (on the right of the source path) you navigate to the directory in which you have stored the GSD file including the picture file.
  4. The GSD file for the selected source path is displayed in the table entitled "Content of imported path". The "Status" column shows whether or not the GSD file is already installed. Select the GSD file by placing a check mark.
  5. Then click the "Install" button. The progress of the installation is displayed in a separate window.

  6. A message informs you of successful installation. Click "Close" to close the dialog. The hardware catalog is then updated.

In the hardware catalog, under "Other field devices" you get a list of all the devices integrated via a GSD file.

Version structure of GSDML files
The GSDML file structure is in compliance with the ISO 15745 "Open Systems Application Integration Framework" and is oriented on the defined profile of a field device via the following model:

Fig. 3

  • The version of the GSDML model used defines which scope of language a
    GSD file uses.
  • The version date is updated, if, for example, an error is cleared or a function extended.

The list below shows the currently supported versions of the GSD files with reference to the TIA Portal.
However, for earlier versions of STEP 7 (TIA Portal) you can also use more recent GSD files with restrictions.
