Why is the following error message displayed when downloading your TIA Portal project: "Resetting the module failed."?

If you get the message given in the header when downloading a project, one possible cause is that there is a difference between the versions.

Description
When downloading your TIA Portal project to an S7-1200 / S7-1500, a reset is required because differences in the versions of the modules (Fig. 1).

The following error message is displayed during the "Reset module" procedure:
"Resetting the module failed." (Fig. 2).

Possible cause
The "Reset module" (Fig. 1) of the main memory and load memory of the module demanded by the download has not worked. In your TIA Portal project you have configured a different IP address to the one that can be reached online.

Remedy
Make sure that the configured IP address matches the IP address that can be reached online and download it to the controller.
If this is not possible, you have the following options:

  1. Transfer the program to the memory card via TIA Portal.
    Here, you should note that implementation of the memory card as transfer card is only possible for the S7-1200 and not for the S7-1500.

  2. Reset the S7 controller S7-1200 / S7-1500 to the factory settings:
