1. Product description

The latest products of the SCALANCE W series provide a combination of reliability, ruggedness, compact design and security in a single product. They are particularly suited:

  • For use by industrial and automation customers

  • For cost-efficient integration of plant sections without control cabinet thanks to especially rugged devices

The Industrial Wireless LAN (IWLAN) technology provides an extension to the IEEE 802.11 standard that is particularly suited to demanding industrial applications with real-time and redundancy requirements. This provides customers with a unique wireless network, both for process-critical data and for uncritical communication.

SCALANCE W products distinguish themselves by the reliability of their radio channel and the rugged type of construction with high requirements with respect to mechanical durability for which SIMATIC is known. To protect against unauthorized access, the products have modern standard mechanisms for user identification (authentication) and data encryption, and can at the same time be easily integrated into existing security concepts.

The international standard IEEE 802.11n makes wireless communication via IWLAN even more robust. All products listed below support MIMO (multiple input, multiple output) technology. This allows the devices parallel use of multiple antennas. A higher data transfer rate is achieved and susceptibility to interference in environments with a lot of reflections is reduced.

Thanks to their rugged design and an IP65 degree of protection, the new devices are particularly well suited for use in tough ambient conditions as well as on-site installation without control cabinets. They can be used for wireless connection of the SIMATIC components as well as other controllers and distributed I/O to the plant without taking up a lot of space. The iFeatures that were especially developed for the controller environment enable real-time transmission over PROFINET or EtherNet/IP as well as a redundant connection via iPRP. A KEY-PLUG W700 iFeatures is required for this purpose (not included in the scope of delivery).

  • Suitable for wireless PROFINET IO, EtherNet/IP real-time communication over iPCF (only in connection with KEY-PLUG)

  • Device replacement without PC/PG is possible by plugging the KEY-PLUG or the C-PLUG removable data storage medium to back up the configuration data

  • Implementation of simple and cost-effective wireless machine networking

  • Suitable for wall mounting as well as mounting on a 35 mm DIN rail (with optional accessories 6GK5798-8MF00-0AA1)

  • Space-saving mounting on the standard mounting rail (with optional accessories 6GK5798-8MA00-0AA1)

  • For use at ambient temperatures from -20 °C to +60 °C

  • 2 x N-Connect sockets for the connection of remote antennas

  • Integrated 2-port switch

  • 2 x M12 connector for 10/100 Mbps Ethernet, with one connector being suitable for Power-over-Ethernet supply according to IEEE 802.3at Type 1 (corresponds to IEEE 802.3af)

  • 2 x 24 V DC M12 connector

  • Function LEDs for optical signaling of faults and operating states

  • Effective spare part inventory thanks to use in control cabinet and for installation without control cabinet
