Sales and delivery release for Extension Units for SIMATIC HMI PRO devices

  • Entry
  • Associated product(s)
In addition to the existing portfolio of Extension Units Hardwired and PROFINET, the Extension Units with PROFISAFE connection are offered with immediate effect. They are available now for delivery.

The portfolio of the new HMI devices with all-round IP65 protection is being expanded by the 12"/15"/19"/22" Extension Units PROFISAFE. These components enable easy and safe adaptation to individual customer requirements for machine-level operator control and monitoring.

In addition labeling options are also available for the operator controls.

Extension Units PROFISAFE:

Example for installation of an Extension Unit with operator controls

The new Extension Units for the 16:9 PRO devices are suitable for the flexible installation of various operator controls that easily extend the operating options on site and on an individual basis. They are coordinated with the design of the SIMATIC HMI PRO devices, and can easily be mounted below the device by the customers themselves.

As well as the conventional hard-wired version of the Extension Units and the bus-capable version with PROFINET, the fail-safe version with PROFISAFE is now available.

The Extension Units PROFISAFE are characterized by:

  • Availability in four different sizes respectively for the 12", 15", 19" and 22" PRO devices.
  • Intuitive and easy configuration in TIA Portal V14 or higher
  • Integrated safety functionality
  • Error-free transmission of safety-related signals from up to two emergency stop buttons to a fail-safe controller
  • Fail-safe operation up to SIL3 (Safety Integrity Level) in compliance with IEC 61508
  • 2x Ethernet interfaces for setting up line and ring networks without ext. switch (integral switch)
  • Support of the Media Redundancy Protocol (MRP) to increase availability
  • Large selection of operator controls (indicator lights, selection switches and keyswitches, emergency stop buttons and RFID readers)
  • Complete flexibility in the layout of the operator controls

Thanks to these properties, the Extension Units enable customers to implement a large variety of operating scenarios.

As part of the SIMATIC portfolio, Extension Units are configured in the TIA Portal like other Siemens automation components. Using the intuitive graphical editor, the Extension Units can be configured by drag and drop, much as they are configured in reality. The parameters of the inputs and outputs of the operator controls can also be set in this way.

The Extension Units PROFINET and PROFISAFE have two PROFINET-capable onboard Ethernet interfaces and can be integrated directly into existing automation networks by means of the integral switch functionality. Thanks to this switch, the PROFINET or PROFISAFE connections can be looped through with the SIMATIC HMI PRO device.

The Extension Units PROFINET and PROFISAFE also have a redundancy mechanism, which allows you to bridge any faults that may occur. By means of the Media Redundancy Protocol (MRP) for networks in a ring topology, a line break or component failure is compensated and continuous operation is ensured.

External interfaces on the communication module of the Extension Unit PROFINET

All Extension Unit PROFINET and PROFISAFE mounting spaces can be used for operator controls. Two of which can be emergency stop buttons. Compared with the Extension Unit Hardwired, there are no layout restrictions for operator controls with the PROFINET variant.

The safety-related signals from the emergency stop buttons are transmitted over PROFISAFE to the F-PLC.

Each Extension Unit offers a specific number of slots for operator controls:

  • Extension Unit 12": 6 slots
  • Extension Unit 15": 8 slots
  • Extension Unit 19": 10 slots
  • Extension Unit 22": 12 slots

The assembling of the Extension Units is very simple. The individual operator controls can be easily mounted and quickly wired in the pre-punched positions without special tools. Just as easily, elements can later be replaced or newly installed in the event of a defect or during a machine retrofit or expansion. (The assembling of the Extension Units is performed by the customer).

The released operator controls for the Extension Units offer easy and straightforward assembling of a customized system solution with standard components. The type, number and arrangement of the operator controls in the Extension Units can be individually defined and according to customer request. Thanks to the properties of the Extension Units, these components can be upgraded or exchanged (even at a later date).

Labeling options of the operator controls

You have two options for labeling the operator controls.

  1. Inscription labels for self-labeling of the illuminated pushbuttons and indicator lights
  2. Label holder for self-labeling of the different operator controls except the emergency stop button

Ordering with the TIA Selection Tool

You can use the TIA Selection Tool to conveniently select, place and order the Extension Units and the associated operator controls. The Extension Units are configured with drag and drop, similar to the TIA Portal.

The TIA Selection Tool supports the selection of the components, checks the slot rules and prevents potential errors. The tool creates a complete ordering list from the product configuration.

Please note:
The configuration of the Extension Units you have created merely results in an order list. The devices are delivered unassembled.
