What restrictions are there with SIMATIC S7-1500 S7-PLCSIM Advanced?

When using know-how-protected blocks or Motion Control projects you should pay attention to the following points.

Simulation of know-how-protected blocks and libraries

If you want to simulate a know-how-protected block with S7-PLCSIM Advanced you must enable simulation in the block properties before setting up block protection. Otherwise simulation is aborted with an error message.

Proceed as follows to support simulation for the know-how-protected block and libraries:

  1. Open the block that is know-how-protected with a password.
  2. In the inspector window you open the Properties of the block and switch to the "Compilation" tab.
  3. Under "Simulation" you can see whether or not the block can be simulated with S7-PLCSIM Advanced. The option "Can be simulated with S7-PLCSIM Advanced" must be checked.

    Fig. 1
  4. If the simulation option has not been enabled by the system, check in the project properties whether support for simulation during compilation of the blocks is enabled. For this you right-click the project name and select the "Properties..." in the pop-up menu. In the "Protection" tab the option "Support simulation when compiling blocks." must be enabled.
  5. Then separately compile each know-how-protected block concerned. Simulation of the know-how-protected blocks is now possible.

Refer also to the information in the manual "SIMATIC S7-1500 S7-PLCSIM Advanced" under Security with S7-PLCSIM Advanced. In this case the know-how protection is limited, but not removed. When you have completed your program test with S7-PLCSIM Advanced, we recommend that you once again disable simulation support for your know-how-protected blocks.

Simulation of programs using Motion Control

Technology modules
PLCSIM Advanced simulates the real CPU. Configured, connected technology modules or other IOs are not simulated. It is possible to download a project with technology modules for operating Motion Control. However, the integrated logic of the technology modules is not part of the simulation, which means that the associated Motion Control instructions are not supported either. More information is available here: . Technology modules

On each CPU there are Motion Control resources (MCR) and Extended Motion Control resources (EMCR) that can be assigned to the technology objects. PLCSIM Advanced does not support the complete quantity framework of MCR and EMCR. The simulation of the motion control is therefore restricted for some CPU modules. More information is available here: MCR and EMCR.

OB 91 (MC-Interpolator) and OB 92 (MC-Servo)
If you convert a Motion Control project created with an earlier version that includes organization blocks OB 91 (MC-Interpolator) and OB 92 (MC-Servo), you cannot load this project into a PLCSIM Advanced.

In the project you delete the two OBs mentioned above and compile the project again.
  • This regenerates the OBs with the simulation support required for PLCSIM Advanced.
  • Compilation resets the properties of the modules to the default values.
Make the required settings once again in the Properties.
