When upgrading your TIA Portal project to V15 or higher, why do you get this error message: "The device [XY] is not supported in this version."?

  • Entry
  • Associated product(s)
Starting with TIA Portal V15, older HMI operator panels are no longer supported.

You want to upgrade your project to TIA Portal V15 or higher but get the following error message for one or more of your operator panels during the process:

"The device [XY] is not supported in this version. Change the HMI device type in the source project. Refer to documentation."

Fig. 1

In order to optimize the installation time, starting with V15 some old devices are no longer supported that could still be configured in earlier versions of TIA Portal and in WinCC flexible.
In addition, in TIA Portal V15 and higher it is also no longer possible to configure devices with a firmware (FW) version <

If you attempt to upgrade a project with a device with an old FW version or with an old device, the procedure is aborted with the error message given above.

Changed device support for TIA Portal V15

The following devices have been removed from TIA Portal version V15:

Changed device support for TIA Portal V16

The following operator panels are no longer supported in TIA Portal V16 and higher:

  • Mobile Panel 177
  • Mobile Panel 277
  • Mobile Panel 277 IWLAN
  • Furthermore, operator panels (Basic Panels, Comfort Panels, Mobile Panels and WinCC Runtime Advanced) configured with device version V12.x are no longer supported in TIA Portal V16 and higher.

To continue using projects containing operator panels with V12.x in TIA Portal V16, change the device version of the affected device to at least V13.x before opening the project.

To optimize the size of the standard installation, in TIA Portal V16 and higher all versions of the operator panel images are exported to an additional DVD. These are available for downloading from the SIOS portal in Entry ID 109772803.

Checking and upgrading old device/firmware versions

To upgrade the project you open it with the last used version of TIA Portal and check whether old devices and/or FW versions are in the project.

If old devices are in the project, you have to replace these devices with current devices (Comfort Panels, Basic Panels 2nd Gen or similar). Instructions for this are available in the manual entitled "SIMATIC STEP 7 Basic/Professional V15 and SIMATIC WinCC V15" (Entry ID 109755202), in the section " Visualizing processes > Communicating with controllers > Replace device".

If there are no old devices in the project, then a firmware version < is probably set for one of the configured panels. Proceed as follows to check/change the set FW version:

  • Open "Devices and Networks".
  • Select the device concerned and right-click to open the option "Change device/version".
  • In the pop-up window, the currently set FW version is on the left. Via the device tree on the right you select the appropriate panel with the latest FW version.

    Fig. 2
  • Change the firmware version to the latest version and compile and save the project.

Then you can upgrade the project to your version of TIA Portal.
