Sinamics PM240-2 braking chopper duty cycle update

With immediate effect the maximum braking chopper duty cycle of Sinamics PM240-2 FS (Frame Size) D to F 3AC 200 V, 3AC 400 V and 3AC 690 V is upgraded from 5% to 50% based on 240 seconds cycle under 40 °C ambient temperature. The update is released both from IEC and UL/CSA perspective. The overview table for the maximum braking chopper duty cycle of Sinamics PM240-2 is presented in Table 1-3.

When the updated braking chopper duty cycle (> 5%) of Sinamics PM240-2 is used, users must pay attention to following points.

  1. Users must select a suitable braking resistor by themselves. Key parameters for selecting the braking resistor can be found from Table 1-3. User must be aware of the resistance tolerance for the self-selected braking resistor. The tolerance should be in the range of -7% to +7%.
  2. Braking resistors provided by Siemens (see ordering information from Chapter 8.6 of Hardware Installation Manual, see 109756015) are only for 5% duty cycle.
  3. It is strongly suggested by Siemens that users select a braking resistor with a thermal switch. There is no I2t protection for the braking resistor from Sinamics PM240-2.
  4. There is a derating of the braking chopper duty cycle of Sinamics PM240-2 FSD to FSF against ambient temperature. Detailed in Figure 1. The derating profile must be considered by users when they engineer the braking chopper.

  1. Wiring a braking resistor to Sinamics PM240-2
    The information of wiring a braking resistor can be found from the HIM Chapter 4 and Chapter 8.6.
  2. General braking chopper engineering guideline, see  22101908
  3. Even so the guideline above is released for Micromaster, the engineering principle is still valid for Sinamics PM240-2. However, the parameterization (e.g., P1237 to define the braking chopper duty cycle profile) and I2t protection are not applied for Sinamics PM240-2 anymore.
