Optical connection in and through ATEX/IECEx Zone 1 or 21

You can connect communication nodes in an ATEX/IECEx Zone 1 or 21 to your network via an optical connection. Additionally, you can conduct optical connections through an ATEX/IECEx Zone 1 or 21.

The requirements for the aforementioned applications are set out in EN/IEC-60079-28. The devices that comply with the standard were previously marked with "Ex nA [op is Gb] IIC T4 Gc".

A change to this standard in the 2015 version excludes devices with optical transceivers that comply with the limit values of Class 1 according to IEC 60825-1 from this regulation.

The suitability of SIMATIC NET devices with corresponding Class 1 laser transceivers has been reviewed by the DEKRA certification authority and incorporated into the certificate with regard to explosion protection. A corresponding list is also included in this certificate. 109475778

Devices with an x in the "Fiber outputs Laser Class 1" column can be used to optically connect nodes in or through ATEX/IECEx Zone 1 and 21:

Note: The devices themselves being used can only be used in the respective zones for which a certificate has been issued. Zone 1 corresponds to Category 2G, Zone 2 to Category 3G, and Zone 21 to Category 2D.

Since SCALANCE SFPs fulfill these requirements, all devices with the corresponding ATEX/IECEx certification and SFP slots, such as SCALANCE XC206-2SFP, can be used for these applications.

Note: The SCALANCE devices themselves can only be used in Zone 2, providing they have the corresponding ATEX/IECEx certification.

An example configuration for the applications described is shown below.

The new certificate does not conflict with existing EN/IEC 60079-28 certifications with the marking "Ex nA [op is Gb] IIC T4 Gc" on the devices. The certificate is valid for the period stamped on the rating plate.
