Subsequently, neither technical support nor software updates will be available via Windows Update to protect the respective PC or SIMATIC IPC.
Microsoft's recommendation is to switch to Windows 10 before the dates mentioned.
This will avoid situations in which service or support is required but is no longer available.
All of the following information relates to both Windows 7 Service Pack 1 and Windows Embedded Standard 7 SP1 unless otherwise specified.
What is the situation after January or October 2020 when using Windows 7?
A PC or SIMATIC IPC with a Windows 7 operating system will continue to work as usual after the above dates, but will be more susceptible to security risks and viruses.
There will be no further software updates or security updates from Microsoft.
The same applies to components of the operating system, such as Internet Explorer, for example.
In addition, it is to be expected that software products from other manufacturers will no longer be developed or maintained for Windows 7. This means that there may be further security gaps that can no longer be closed by the respective software manufacturer under Windows 7.
It should be noted that not only computers that directly access or can be reached from the Internet are at risk. Unauthorized access or attacks can also occur through other systems from the same network that communicate with the Internet or are poorly secured.
Windows 7 for SIMATIC IPCs after 14 January or 13 October 2020
SIMATIC IPCs that can currently be ordered with a pre-installed Windows 7 operating system can still be ordered with the respective Windows 7 after the above deadlines.
It should be noted that the individual IPC products have a different status with regard to their product lifecycle. Information on the availability of the IPCs will be communicated for the specific products in good time.
The Windows 7 operating system is fully licensed and functional.
Additional security measures are strongly recommended, since Microsoft will no longer provide software and security updates for Windows 7 operating systems.

Upgrade to Windows 10
Operating system packages are available for certain products to upgrade to Windows 10 Enterprise 2016 LTSB.
Corresponding packages for Windows 10 Enterprise 2019 LTSC are already in preparation and will be available soon.
Important information on upgrading from Windows Embedded Standard 7 SP1 to Windows 10
Some SIMATIC IPCs can be ordered with Windows Embedded Standard 7 SP1 and CFast card as mass storage for the operating system. These cards are not approved for operation with Windows 10.
In this case, use the new SIMATIC CFast card 128 GB 6ES7648-2BF10-0XM1 that has been approved for Windows 10. Alternatively, the installation of another approved storage medium by a qualified specialist is also possible.
If you have any questions, please contact your Siemens representative or a SIMATIC IPC Repair Center.
Unified Write Filter
Windows 10 Enterprise 2016 LTSB and Windows 10 Enterprise 2019 LTSC contain a configurable write filter (Unified Write Filter) with which it is possible to provide data media such as CFast cards with write protection.
The UWF combines the advantages of older write filters such as Enhanced Write Filter (EWF) and File Based Write Filter (FBWF). It prevents all write access to protected media and redirects the data to a buffer memory (overlay). This increases the reliability and stability of the system as well as the lifetime of write-sensitive media such as SSDs and CFast cards.
