SIMOTICS XP/SD/DP, low-voltage motors-product announcement and sales release: new special paint systems C5mid and CX “offshore”

General requirements

The objective of this memorandum is the extension of our available paint systems with the new high performance protective coating systems suitable for corrosivity categories C5-very high and CX-extreme according to ISO 12944-2:2018.

We want to offer our customers a reliable complete coating solution for the most demanding industrial and offshore enviroments. The main goal is a significant strengthening of the surface protection of cast iron motors in order to increase their reliability and reduce the maintenance and service costs for our customers.

Durability of the paint system

The ISO 12944-1 standards defines different durability ranges. The paint system C5mid was developed to achieve durability Medium with time of first major coating failure from 7 to 15 years.

The paint system CX intended for extreme environment meets durability High with this value from 15 to 25 years.

The already existing option code S04 (C5 special paint system „offshore“) fulfills durability Low, < 7 years.

The defined durability is the expected life of a protective paint system till first major maintenance painting. It is not a warranty time, but it is a planning parameter that can help the owner to set up an appropriate maintenance plan.

The product lines availability for C5mid and CX

These paint systems are valid for cast iron motor lines only because of necessary blasting and metalization.

The overall available frame size range is from SH 71 to SH 355 for the motor lines mentioned under table below.

Migration Strategy

The new revision of ISO 12944:2018 is superseding the old standard ISO 12944:1998. The corrosion categories C1 to C3 remain the same and therefore the standard paint and special paint systems acc. to option codes S00 to S03 remain unchanged.

The formerly known corrosion categories C5-I “Industrial” and C5-M “Marine” were replaced by the category C5. The offshore paint system acc. to option code S04 remains unchanged as well and is complying with category C5 durability Low. In case of C5 in combination with durability Medium please select option code S08.

Corrosion category CX is new and beyond all categories of the old standard, in that case please select option code S09.

The Norway petroleum industry is often referring to “Norsok” paint systems defined by country-specific laws. The CX paint system (S09) is the Siemens equivalent for Norsok 2B and the C5mid paint system (S08) is the equivalent for Norsok 1B. These paint systems are developed and approved by Norwegian enduser.


Protocols from surface treatment and painting operations

The report from surface treatment will be created automatically for each motor with paint system CX. In case of C5mid the report can be created on request only.


Operation in the explosion hazardous atmosphere

The paint system for the motors SIMOTICS XP exposed in hazardous atmosphere must comply with the requirments defined in IEC 60079-0 article 7.4 for explosion Group II and Group III. The paint systems C5mid and CX intended for SIMOTICS XP were developed with conductive paints and certified by accredited laboratories for usage in hazardous areas without restrictions. Hence the paint systems C5mid and CX with total paint thickness of more than 200µm can even be used for explosive atmospheres of gas group IIC.

The standard modular technology like rotary speed encoder and brake are suitable for corrosive categories defined by manufacturer and they are not generally suitable for categories C5 and CX.  

Comments:

1) Polysiloxan material is free of isocyanates, as required by some offshore compaines. Several color shades are not allowed due to conductive mixture in the paint.
