How do you synchronize time-of-day with PROFIBUS in the SIMATIC environment?

Description
Time-of-day synchronization is supported by all three major product families in the SIMATIC range: SIMATIC S7, SIMATIC S5 and PC. This synchronization can be done both via Industrial Ethernet and via PROFIBUS and MPI. This entry describes an example of synchronizing time-of-day using PROFIBUS.

You can use the PROFIBUS CPs below for synchronizing time-of-day with PROFIBUS.

Synchronizing time-of-day using PROFIBUS

This entry includes instructions for the following:

  1. Configuring the S7-400 station as time master (transmitter)
  2. Configuring the S7-400 station as time slave (receiver)
  3. Configuring time-of-day synchronization for one PC station

Time-of-day synchronization for the S7-400 station is configured in the Hardware Configuration. In the Properties dialog of the CPU, you select the "Diagnostics/Clock" tab and then select the synchronization mode. You can configure the S7-400 CPUs as time master (time-of-day transmitter) or time slave (time-of-day receiver).
Set whether synchronization is to be in the CPU (synchronization in the PLC) or using MPI (synchronization on MPI). Synchronization in the PLC includes the CPs.
You can select a time interval of between 1 second and 24 hours for the synchronization.

Configuring the S7-400 station as time master (transmitter)
Proceed as follows to configure the S7-400 station as time master.

1. In the hardware configuration of the S7-400 station, you open the Properties dialog of the CPU and select the "Diagnostics/Clock" tab.

Set "As master" for the synchronization mode in the PLC and select the time interval for the synchronization, 10 seconds, for example.

Click on "OK" to close the dialog.

2. The PROFIBUS CP of the S7-400 is parameterized for passing on time-of-day in the hardware configuration.

Open the Properties dialog of the PROFIBUS CP and switch to the "Options" tab. Parameterize the direction for passing on the time-of-day messages. If the S7-400 station is functioning as time master, then you enable the direction below for passing on the time messages:

  • From station to LAN

The time-of-day messages from the CPU are passed on to the PROFIBUS subnet by way of the PROFIBUS CP.

Configuring the S7-400 station as time slave (receiver)
Proceed as follows to configure the S7-400 station as time slave.

1. In the hardware configuration of the S7-400 station, you open the Properties dialog of the CPU and select the "Diagnostics/Clock" tab.

Set "As slave" for the synchronization mode in the PLC.

Click on "OK" to close the dialog.

Note
Synchronizing the time-of-day guarantees a network-wide accuracy of the time with a maximum deviation of 10 ms.

Configuring time-of-day synchronization for a PC station
CP5613 (FO/A2), CP5614 (FO/A2), CP5623 and CP5624 are available for synchronizing time-of-day with the PC. CP5613 (FO) and CP5614 (FO) can be configured with NCM PC as from SIMATIC NET PC software V6.0 (CD 07/2001). Go to the hardware configuration of the PC station and open the Properties dialog of the PROFIBUS PC CPs. Switch to the "Options" tab and enable the "Time of day" function. You can configure the PROFIBUS PC CPs as time master (transmitter) or time slave (receiver).

The time-of-day is not automatically transmitted or received by the PC. This has to be realized in the form of an application that writes the time via function calls or reads it from the CP.
