This FAQ response explains the procedure in WinCC flexible/WinCC (TIA Portal) for sending e-mails from a Windows CE-Panel or PC.

Make the following settings in the Engineering Software for sending e-mails:

  • Name of the SMTP server
  • Name of the SMTP sender (WinCC flexible 2005 and higher)
  • SMTP authentication (depending on the provider of the SMTP server):
    • Authentication via a valid e-mail address (as from WinCC flexible 2005)
      or
    • Authentication via user name and ID (as from WinCC flexible 2008 SP1)
  • To trigger sending you configure the system function "Send e-mail" or an alarm class with the e-mail address of the recipient.
  • SSL connection (optional with WinCC flexible 2008 SP1 and higher)

Notes

  • The "Sm@rtService" license is required for implementation in WinCC flexible. (This feature is included in the delivery package of WinCC (TIA Portal).)
  • The sending of e-mails is supported by all panels of the 170 series and higher with Ethernet interface - except Basic Panels.
  • If error message 70033 "No connection to the SMTP server or authentication not possible." appears in the alarm window of the Windows CE panel, check the following settings.

Settings of the SMTP server in WinCC flexible

You configure the SMTP server of WinCC flexible in you project under "Device Settings > General > SMTP Settings" or for WinCC (TIA Portal) under "Runtime Settings > Services > SMTP Communication".
  • WinCC flexible 2004 and higher:
    Authentication is not supported.
  • WinCC flexible 2005 and higher:
If the e-mail service involves authentication with a provider, a valid e-mail address, e.g. "John.Doe@gmx.net", must be registered under "SMTP Authentication". For this authentication, you do not need a user name and password!
  • WinCC flexible 2008 SP1 and higher and WinCC (TIA Portal):
If an SMTP authentication with user name and password is necessary, you must enter a valid user name and the associated password.

Note
Check with your ISP (Internet Service Provider) whether you need a valid e-mail address in addition.

Settings on the operator panel

On your Windows CE panel the settings are under "Control Panel > Internet Settings > Email > SMTP server" or on your Windows CE 5.0 and higher under "Control Panel > WinCC Internet Settings > Email > SMTP server".
Here you should note that with a Windows CE panel the SMTP server may only be specified in the form of the computer name or FQDN (Fully Qualified Domain Name).

Your firewall settings

In your firewall you must release the port used for sending e-mail. More information on the ports used by WinCC flexible is available in Entry ID: 24534065.

Example
If the IP address is used instead of the computer name for the SMTP server on a Windows CE panel, the panel interprets the IP address as the computer name of the SMTP server and attempts to resolve it. This prompts the system message described above.

On the other hand, in the case of a PC with WinCC flexible RT, both the computer name or FQDN and the IP address of the SMTP server are used.

Note

  • The e-mail settings can also be defined on the operator panel in "Control Panel > WinCC flexible Internet Settings" / "Email" tab.
Please note that settings on the panel or PC override settings in the project. Therefore, if the settings on the panel or PC are deleted, the defaults configured in the WinCC flexible project apply!

  • Also refer to the entry on "Configuration - Internet Settings" in Entry ID 18982110.
With WinCC flexible 2005 and higher the icon is called "WinCC Internet Settings" and the corresponding settings menu is called "WinCC flexible Internet Settings".

Settings of the port for SMTP servers
WinCC flexible communicates with SMTP servers via the permanently preset Port 25. With WinCC (TIA Portal) Port 25 is a modifiable presetting. This port is no longer supported by all email service providers. Currentlists of the released ports of different providers are available in the internet. If you are note sure whether your provider communicates via Port 25, proceed as follows:

    1. Open the input prompt of your PC.
    2. Enter the command line "telnet [SMTP server name] 25". Here you replace "[SMTP server name]" with the name of the server concerned.
    3. If you get a message saying that it is not possible to establish a connection, Port 25 of your server is blocked. In this case you use a different email service provider.

    Note
The "Telnet" tool is not enabled by default on all Windows installations. If the command is not known in your input prompt, enable Telnet in Windows 7 via "Control Panel -> Programs and Functions -> Enable or Disable Windows Functions". The path might differ slightly in other versions of Windows.
