PC-based Automation: Plant Visualization with Visual Basic .NET via the OPC XML-DA Interface

Problem
The following application shows you how to operate and monitor an example process, which is controlled by a WinAC RTX controller, using a self-generated visualization user interface.

Solution
The solution introduced here uses the OPC XML-DA interface of the SIMATIC NET OPC server (from V6.2 SP1) for data exchange between visualization and controller. The visualization program was realized with Microsoft Visual Basic .NET.

Solution Requirements

This application comprises the following points:

  • Using the OPC XML-DA interface of the SIMATIC NET OPC servers (from V6.2 SP1) in a Microsoft Visual Basic .NET program.

  • Reading and visualizing process values from the WinAC RTX controller.

  • Writing setpoint values into the WinAC RTX controller.

  • The visualization program can also be used remotely (e.g. via the internet).

  • The basic functionality (reading and writing of process values via the OPC XML-DA interface) can also be expanded to large quantities.
