PC-based Automation: Plant Visualization with Visual Basic .NET via the OPC XML-DA Interface
The following application shows you how to operate and monitor an example process, which is controlled by a WinAC RTX controller, using a self-generated visualization user interface.
The solution introduced here uses the OPC XML-DA interface of the SIMATIC NET OPC server (from V6.2 SP1) for data exchange between visualization and controller. The visualization program was realized with Microsoft Visual Basic .NET.
This application comprises the following points:
Using the OPC XML-DA interface of the SIMATIC NET OPC servers (from V6.2 SP1) in a Microsoft Visual Basic .NET program.
Reading and visualizing process values from the WinAC RTX controller.
Writing setpoint values into the WinAC RTX controller.
The visualization program can also be used remotely (e.g. via the internet).
The basic functionality (reading and writing of process values via the OPC XML-DA interface) can also be expanded to large quantities.
The following figure shows the interaction of the automation components, which are described in this example, in principle.
Here you see the hardware setup realized for this application, as well as the software to be installed for the components.
Eight applications are available in the Applications & Tools portal to round off and extend the required expert knowledge on “PC-based automation”. We have developed and described one example for each of the four typical automation tasks (controlling, communication, visualization, technology). The respective links are listed in the table below.
