  • Entry
  • Associated product(s)

Version 6.0 of the SIMATIC PDM Process Device Manager is now available for general release. The special features of SIMATIC PDM V6.0 are: numerous new and improved functions, easier operation, updated and supplemented device descriptions, integration of additional field devices, simplified import of field device descriptions, improved performance and consistency checking, customer-oriented product structure as well as reformed licensing model.

1 Product description

1.1 Classification/Application

SIMATIC PDM is now firmly established as a universal, non-proprietary tool for configuring, parameterizing, commissioning, diagnosing and maintaining intelligent field devices (sensors and actuators) and field components (remote I/Os, multiplexers, control room devices, compact controllers). With more than 1000 device descriptions for a range of devices from more than 100 manufacturers worldwide, SIMATIC PDM has the largest library of all parameterization tools available on the market. The number of supported devices, functionality, performance and ease of operation have now been extended, supplemented and improved with Version 6.0.

1.2.2 Detailed information on particular product features

Improved performance and consistency checking
The access to field devices and the processing of field devices with numerous parameters, in particular, has been speeded up. SIMATIC PDM compares the project data with the device parameters and points to any existing inconsistences.
Updating and supplementing of device descriptions
Several manufacturers have supplied new or updated device descriptions for the field devices and components organized in the PROFIBUS and HART device catalogs. These have been integrated into SIMATIC PDM. The HART device catalog of SIMATIC PDM corresponds to the current catalog of the HART Communication Foundation (HCF), issued in June 2004.
Integration of additional field devices and components
We will shortly be publishing in a separate What's New article a list of all field devices and components whose device descriptions are included on the "Device Catalog" CD supplied.
Further device descriptions are available via the Internet pages of the respective manufacturers.
Simplified import of new field device descriptions
By anchoring the import function in SIMATIC PDM, the importing of new field device descriptions is now considerably easier and more convenient. It is no longer necessary to use the deviceinstall.exe file previously required for the import. It is also possibel to set up project-specific device catalogs, into which only those device descriptions required for the current project are imported.
More transparent type of delivery
SIMATIC PDM software and device catalog are now supplied on separate data volumes (CDs). This makes for greater transparency and demonstrates the independence of software and device description with regard to function and responsibility. In addition, software and device catalog can be maintained and updated independently of one another.
Reformed licensing model with floating and rental licenses
A new licensing model for SIMATIC PDM takes effect with Version 6.0. SIMATIC PDM is now available in the form of floating and rental licenses. The user rights are no longer assigned by means of authorization, but by means of License Keys. The License Keys are administered by the Automation License Manager (ALM). The AuthorsW program is no longer used.
Customer-oriented product structure
A new, customer-oriented product structure enables you to adapt the scope of functions and performance of SIMATIC PDM to your individual needs. You can decide on the minimum configuration (single point), select one of the predefined product configurations or assemble your desired configuration from the individual components on offer (see table below for overview of products).

1.3.2 Compatibility of the device descriptions

In principle, all previously used device descriptions offer exactly the same functional capability with SIMATIC PDM V6.0 as with SIMATIC PDM V5.2 SP1. With SIMATIC PDM V6.0, the interpretation of the device descriptions has been adapted to the requirements of the internationalen standard IEC 81604-2. Due to this adaptation, error messages could occur in the interpretation of device descriptions in individual cases. This concerens the interpretation of texts stored in the device descriptions which cannot be changed. In this case, please contact the corresponding device manufacturer for an update of the device description.

1.3.3 Hardware compatibility

The compatibility of SIMATIC PDM V6.0 with PC communication processors (CPs) for PROFIBUS, Industrial Ethernet and HART communication is shown in the following three tables. Please also note the product-specific releases for CPs in the case of STEP 7 and PCS 7.

1.3.4 Use of communication modules from other manufacturers

It is not explicity forbidden to use Siemens communication modules that are not listed in the above tables, or communication modules from other manufacturers. This applies in particular to communication modules for HART communication. The use of SIMATIC PDM in combination with modules that have not explicitly been released is, however, at your own risk. Siemens accepts no liability for defects or for damage that might arise as a result of their use. Delivery and support of non-Siemens components are not handled by Siemens, but only through the respective manufacturer or their distributors. The following components form other manufacturers have been used during system tests of SIMATIC PDM without any recognizable problems arising (see also Chapter 4, Supplementary product-specific conditions for the permission to use software):

2 Ordering information

2.1 Ordering data for SIMATIC PDM V6.0

Please note: A TAG corresponds to a SIMATIC PDM object that represents individual field devices or components within a project, e.g. transmitters, positioners, switchgear or remote I/Os. TAGs are also relevant for the diagnosis with the lifelist of SIMATIC PDM. All recognized devices capable of diagnosis whose detailed diagnosis is implemented via the device description (EDD) are counted as TAGs.
