Establishing the DP response time, HMI update time and the HMI operating time for typical configurations on the non-synchronized PROFIBUS DP

Task
Many applications require a quick response time via the distributed inputs and outputs. In SIMATIC, mainly PROFIBUS DP is used for quick and efficient data exchange between distributed I/O and S7 stations. Typical DP configurations consist of a DP master and several DP slaves on a DP line. Programming devices or operator panels (load at the subnet) are often operated on the same DP line.
When planning such configurations the following questions arise even in the concept phase:

  • How long does it take until a distributed output responds to a distributed input?
  • How long does it take during process alarms until a distributed output responds to a distributed input?
  • What fluctuations can occur?
  • What influence does communication via PROFIBUS DP have on the cycle time of the DP master?
  • What times are to be expected when operating TouchPanels?

With the use of Panel PCs, some further questions arise:

  • How do the response times behave, if a WinAC RTX as well as a WinCC flexible runtime configuration run on a PanelPC?
  • What are the effects of a WinCC flexible Runtime configuration of a PanelPC on the times of additional TouchPanels?

Solution
To answer the above questions, Industry Automation and Customer Services carried out extensive measurements on typical configurations with SIMATIC components, which provide planning certainty for your plants: 

  • Different DP masters communicate with up to 60 DP slaves.
  • Optionally one programming device or up to 10 operator panels are operated at the same DP line.
  • The DP Master runs with various typical user programs. Various typical configurations are loaded in the operating devices. In the programming device, the State function is active.
  • The WinAC RTX and WinCC flexible Runtime configurations are simultaneously operated on a PanelPC.

A simple user interface of a web application provides you with the results of the measurements.

Overview of the measured variables:

Measured variable

Description

DP response time (OB1) Time from receiving a process signal at the input of the ET200 until activation of an output at the ET200 (via process image).
DP response time (OB40) Time from receiving a process signal at the input of the ET200 until the activation of an output at the ET200 (via process-alarm and direct commands).
Cycle time Time between two process image transfers in the DP Master.
HMI update time Time from receiving a process signal at the input of the ET200 until the display of a color change in the TouchPanel.
HMI operating time Time from pressing an operator button at the panel until setting a process signal at the output of the ET200.
PPC update time Time from receiving a process signal at the input of the ET200 until the display of a color change in the PanelPC.
PPC operating time Time from pressing an operator button at the PanelPC until setting a process signal at the output of ET200.

Note
Measurement was performed for some typical configurations. This does not mean that every possible configuration has been measured.
