How do you install the display driver in Windows XP SP2?

If the display remains dark after installing Windows XP Service Pack 2, you must reinstall the display driver.
The table below describes how to proceed to install the display driver in Windows XP SP2. It is assumed that the operating system has been installed ex-factory or from the Restore CD.

No. Procedure
1 Switch on your Field PG P3 and start the Safe Mode of Windows XP by pressing the "F5" key when booting Windows. The Windows "Advanced Options" menu opens.
  • Select the "Safe Mode" acknowledge with the "Enter" key.
2 Start the Windows Explorer by right-clicking on "Start" and selecting "Explorer" in the pop-up menu that opens.
3 In the Explorer click on the "Search" button and in the subsequent dialog search for the files i81xnt5.inf and i81xnt.pnf.

Then rename these files, for example to

  • i81xnt5.inf.xp2 and
  • i81xnt.pnf.xp2
4 In Windows you open the"Control Panel" via "Start > Settings > Control Panel" and there you open the "System Properties" dialog as in Fig. 02.

You get to the "Control Panel" menu

  • via "Start > Control Panel"
    in the Start menu for simplified access to the programs in Windows XP.
  • via "Start > Settings > Control Panel"
    for the classic Start menu as in earlier versions of Windows.
5 Note on Windows XP:
In the Control Panel (via "Start > Settings > Control Panel") in Windows XP there are two different views, the Classic View and the Category View.

Category View
In the Category View (Fig. 03) you first open the menu "Performance and Maintenance".

Then, in the "Performance and Maintenance" menu you select the "System Properties" dialog.

Classic View
In the Classic View (Fig. 05) you can open the "Systems Properties" dialog directly.

6 In the "System Properties" dialog you select the "Hardware" tab and open the "Device Manager" as shown in Fig. 06.

Then, in the Device Manager you delete the "Intel 82815 Graphics Controller" as shown in Fig. 07 via "Action > Uninstall".

7 Now restart the PG. After startup the operating system recognizes a VGA graphics card, but can't find a driver for it. Select
  • "Can Windows connect to Windows Update to search for Software > No, not this time > Next".

In the dialog "Found New Hardware Wizard" you select

  • "Install the software automatically > Next".

In the next window you select

  • "No, do not connect to the Internet now > Next".

In the subsequent dialog you activate (set check mark) the option:

  • "Don't prompt me again to install this software".

Then close the dialog by clicking on the "Finish" button.

8 Install the new display driver V6.13.01.3196 by double-clicking the "win2k_xpm67.exe" file and follow the prompts of the InstallShield Wizard.

The new display driver is now installed.

9 Start the PG in the VGA mode by pressing the "F5" key when you boot Windows. The Windows "Advanced Options" menu opens. Select
  • "Enable VGA Mode"

and acknowledge with the "Enter" key.

10 Open the "Display Properties" via "Start > Settings > Control Panel > Display" and here you select the "Settings" tab. Observe the notes for Windows XP described in Points 4 and 5. Then click the "Advanced" button. In the dialog that opens select the "Monitor" tab and set the monitor type to "Default Monitor". Also disable the option "Hide modes that this monitor cannot display".

Accept the settings by clicking on the "Apply" button and then close the dialog with "OK".

11 Restart your PG and open the "Display Properties" as described in Point 10 and select the "Settings" tab. Set the resolution to 1024x768 pixels as shown in Fig. 09.

Accept the settings by clicking on the "Apply" button and then close the dialog with "OK".
