No. Tips and tricks for installing and upgrading software in STEP 7
1 Compatibility with operating systems, SIMATIC software packages and Internet Explorer
Information about the compatibility of STEP 7 with the operating systems, SIMATIC software packages and Internet Explorer is available in the following entries:
  • Compatibility between STEP 7 and MS Windows, Entry ID: 8250891,
  • Compatibility between STEP 7, SIMATIC software packages and MS Windows, Entry ID: 18734363,

2 How can you install STEP 7 V5.5 in Windows 7 (64 bit)?
STEP 7 is released in Windows 7 (64 bit) as of version V5.5+SP1. It is not possible to install STEP 7 V5.5 without service pack in Windows 7 (64 bit). For this you need the full version of STEP 7 V5.5+SP1, because a service pack or update only upgrades an existing installation.

How can you install STEP 7 if a version of STEP 7 OEM is already installed on the PC?
You must uninstall the STEP 7 OEM version before installing STEP 7 Basic or STEP 7 Professional, otherwise installation is aborted with an error message. You cannot install STEP 7 over the OEM version.

In the Control Panel you open the "Software" dialog and select the "Add or Remove Programs" tab. Mark the tool "STEP 7 OEM Version" and uninstall by clicking the "Remove" button. Reboot your PC before restarting your STEP 7 installation.

Notes
If it is still not possible to install STEP 7, you must uninstall the STEP 7 software completely. For this refer to our FAQ "How can you completely uninstall STEP 7 including all the software packages?" in Entry ID: 189025.

4 How can you clear the cause of the message "Error 401: string variable is not large enough for string"?
If shortly after starting the STEP 7 Installation Setup you get the message "Error 401: string variable is not large enough for string", in the Control Panel you open the "System Properties" and select the "Advanced" tab. Then in the dialog that opens you click on the "Environment Variables" button.

Check the system variable "Path". This variable must not contain the value "%path%". Remove this value using the "Edit System Variable" function.

Then save the dialog with OK and restart your PC before installing STEP 7.

5 Which versions of MS Windows XP can be used for STEP 7 V5.3?
The following versions of MS Windows XP Professional have been tested and released for use with STEP 7. Trouble-free installation is possible on these operating systems:
  • MS Windows XP Professional German
  • MS Windows XP Professional French
  • MS Windows XP Professional English
  • MS Windows XP Professional Spanish
  • MS Windows XP Professional Italian
  • MS Windows XP Professional Multilingual User Interface Pack (MUI)

STEP 7 V5.3 Japanese can be installed on the following operating systems:

  • MS Windows XP Professional Japanese
  • MS Windows XP Professional Multilingual User Interface Pack (MUI)

Note
If you attempt to install STEP 7 V5.3 on a PC on which the MS Windows XP Professional operating system is installed in Chinese or Korean, you get an error message at the beginning of the installation procedure: "1324: The installation path contains an invalid character".

6 How can you install STEP 7 V5.4 if you get the message "NCM PC Manager is already installed"?
If SIMATIC WinCC V6 is installed on a PC and the installation of STEP 7 is aborted with the message described above, you must uninstall the NCM PC software. In the Control Panel you open the "Software" dialog and select the "Add or Remove Programs" tab. Mark the tool "NCM PC Software" and uninstall by clicking on the "Remove" button. Reboot your PC before restarting your STEP 7 installation.
7 How do you install missing languages?
It is not possible to install any missing language. To receive the missing language you must re-install STEP 7. Uninstallation and installation of STEP 7 is independent of any options packages that are installed. In this way you can install STEP 7 without having to remove the options packages.

If you have a multilingual installation, we recommend that you nevertheless re-install the options packages, because in such cases the options packages are not installed with the language to be installed now.

If unwanted side effects arise when you re-install STEP 7, we recommend completely uninstalling STEP 7 and then repeating the installation. Information about completely uninstalling STEP 7 is available in Entry ID: 189025

8 Why does installation of the STEP 7 software hang with the Start picture and can no longer be closed?
  1. Cause
Possibly the implementation of a dual monitor and the software tool "Deskman.exe" from ELSA belonging to the graphics card.
    Remedy
If you have this software tool installed, then please start the Task Manager and end the "Deskman.exe" task. It should now be possible to install STEP 7.
  2. Cause
Lack of administrator rights on the PC.
    Note
To install STEP 7 you need administrator rights in Windows 2000/XP/NT.To install STEP 7 you need administrator rights in Windows 2000/XP/NT. Please also refer to the information in the readme file, section 3.1 Runtime environment (user rights).
9 How can you install STEP 7 via USB if the selection window of the software to be installed remains empty?
Copy the contents of the STEP 7 CD to your hard disk and start the Setup from the hard disk. The complete installation of the STEP 7 software CD is necessary because at Setup a list of *.ssf entries is generated in the "rasetup.log" file. If the list on the hard disk does not match the newly generated list, the selection window remains empty.
10 Why does STEP 7 freeze when the SIMATIC Manager is opened?
Check whether the Task Manager has information about the program status. If nothing is displayed, STEP 7 has probably not been installed in the directory recommended.

Remedy

  • Uninstall STEP 7 as described in Entry ID: 189025 .
  • Install STEP 7 and all the S7 software packages in the default directory [DRIVE]:\SIEMENS.
11 Why can you not use special characters for the names of files, folders and projects?
Special characters must not be used for the names of files, folders and projects, because otherwise the directory of STEP 7 is not recognized when installing the SIMATIC software. You must also avoid names that contain a period, "D:\Programs.<Name>\...", for example. More information is available in the README.RTF file in section 6.2.
12 Why are some software products grayed in the installation menu (STEP 7, License Manager, for example)?
The basic setup of the SIMATIC software checks which version of the software is already installed on your computer. If, for example, STEP 7 V5.4 SP4 is already installed on your computer, this can no longer be selected and is thus grayed.
