New: Additional ordering options for SIMATIC Microbox 420-RTX
The SIMATIC Microbox 420-RTX is the pre-installed, embedded PC-based solution consisting of a Microbox PC 420 and WinAC RTX 2005. In addition to the already-available versions, new models with higher processing performance and a larger CompactFlash memory are now available for ordering.
The following ordering options are now available in addition to the currently-available versions of the SIMATIC Microbox 420-RTX with Celeron 400 MHz Processor and 1 GB CompactFlash card:
- Intel Celeron 650 MHz or Intel Pentium III 933 MHz
- CompactFlash Card 2 GB
The Microbox 420-RTX is a member of the SIMATIC Embedded Automation product family.
It combines the best of 2 worlds: The openness and flexibility of a PC-based solution combined with the ruggedness of a classical PLC. The Microbox 420-RTX requires neither a fan nor rotating bulk storage media and is therefore maintenance-free.
Salient features are:
- The hard disk is replaced by a CF card.
New: The Microbox 420-RTX is available for ordering with either a 1 GB or 2 GB CompactFlash card.
- The operating system is Windows XP embedded. Windows XP embedded is scalable in order to reduce the memory space required on the CF card. Windows XP embedded also increases security against attacks by malignant software (viruses, worms, sabotage etc.).
- Low-power processors facilitate fanless operation.
New: A Celeron 650 MHz or Pentium III 933 MHz processor can be ordered in addition to the already-available Celeron 400 MHz

Fast launch into the world of automation
The Microbox 420-RTX facilitates an easy start into the world of automation based on embedded PC systems. The user can concentrate immediately on configuring his/her automation solution without having to install and configure WinAC and the SIMATIC NET software first.
- SIMATIC WinAC RTX 2005 and SIMATIC NET, including license keys, are pre-installed and configured.
- The Ethernet connection is set up for operation within the SIMATIC environment. If required, the user only has to allocate the necessary Ethernet addresses using operating systems mechanisms.
- To program SIMATIC WinAC RTX, the user can simply connect a proramming device to PROFIBUS or an Ethernet port and go "online" with the PC station or with SIMATIC WinAC RTX.
Flexibility of a PC-based automation solution
The CF cards used leave sufficient space in addition to the SIMATIC WinAC RTX for additional applications such as visualization, Visual Basic or ODK. These applications can be installed on the hardware with the aid of a network drive or a USB device.
The functional scope of Windows XP embedded as selected for the platform was chosen such that typical PC software can generally be installed without any problems and typical USB devices such as CD-ROMs, USB sticks etc. can be used immediately.
Standard monitors, USB keyboards and mouse can be used for startup. It should be noted here that the Microbox 420-RTX is equipped with a DVI-I interface and a VGA adapter may therefore be necessary for the monitor.
New: From processor performance Celeron 650 MHz and higher, WinCC flexible RT can be used for visulaization in addition to control tasks. Preferably industry-standard SIMATIC Flat Panels with touch functionality or SCD monitors can be used for display purposes.
Retentive data without UPS
The SIMATIC WinAC RTX has been enhanced for the Microbox 420-RTX with a feature enabling storage of up to 25 KBytes of process data in the case of a power outage on the integrated SRAM memory of the Microbox. In addition to the process data, the operating system states and diagnostic buffer are also saved, thus ensuring automatic startup of the Microbox following a power outage. An external UPS is thus no longer necessary to save process data.
If in addition to the controller other programs should require data backup in the case of a power outage, (e.g. database applicaitons or archives), a UPS can still be used for protection against data loss.

SIMATIC WinCC flexible
SIMATIC WinCC flexible 2005 SP1 can be used in addition to WinAC RTX for processor performance 650 MHz and higher. Installation can take place with the aid of an external USB drive.
ODK applications created with WinAC ODK V4.1 can be used. The executability of the ODK application on the Windows XP embedded image of the Microbox PC must be verified and released by the creator of the ODK application.
The functional scope of Windows XP embedded as selected for the platform was chosen such that typical PC software can generally be installed and oeprated without any problems (note the free memory space on the CF card!). Typical USB devices such as CD-ROMs, USB sticks, keyboards, mouse etc. can then be operated at once. However, an operability guarantee cannot be given for all Windows software or USB devices.
