Which messages may appear in the "Download OS" dialog box?

  • Entry
  • Associated product(s)
When downloading changes of a PCS 7 OS, different messages might occur as described in this entry. There is a fundamental difference between downloading changes for a PCS 7 OS and downloading changes in the case of a dedicated WinCC station (WinCC native).

Possible messages

No download possible - "RT station not obtainable"
Fig. 01 shows the "Download OS" dialog when the target station cannot be reached in the network.

Please also refer to the notes in Entry ID 22559072.

Changes or the entire project can be downloaded
Fig. 02 shows the "Download OS" dialog which opens if the requirements for downloading changes are met. In this case, you can choose to download either just the changes or the entire project.

Only the entire project can be downloaded
Fig. 03 shows the "Download OS" dialog which opens if only the requirements for downloading the entire project are met. Changes cannot be downloaded.
The option "The entire WinCC project" is enabled in the "Scope" area of the "Download OS" dialog box. The "Changes" option is disabled and not available for operation.

Fig. 03

The following information text is displayed: "The entire WinCC project will be transferred to the runtime OS".

Note
As soon as the target station is opened in Runtime or the WinCC Explorer is opened, the following text is displayed in addition:
"Target system will be deactivated and closed automatically before download starts.".
Ensure that the WinCC Runtime login dialog box is closed if you wish to download the entire project. If the login dialog box is open on the target station, the WinCC project on the target station cannot be automatically deactivated and closed. As a result, the download process is blocked. This behavior no longer occurs in PCS 7 V7.0 SP1 onwards.

Reasons

  • Type of WinCC application
The configured type of WinCC application in the PC station does not support downloading changes. Downloading changes is only possible for WinCC Server applications (server, redundant server and referenced server). Changes cannot be downloaded in client, CAS or SPOSA applications.
  • OS delta compilation
A complete OS compilation has been performed without a subsequent complete download.

    Note
If there is a redundant pair of servers, the Master OS and Standby OS must be downloaded in their entirety. The entire download must be started separately for the Master OS and Standby OS. However, the downloading of changes can only be started from the configured Master OS. The configured Standby OS is automatically downloaded first, then the configured Master OS.

Download changes is selected but cannot be executed - "Master is not activated. ..."
Although the "Changes" check box for defining the "Scope" of the download has been selected, the download procedure cannot be started because the "OK" button is disabled. The text "Master is not activated. Load Online Changes is not possible." is displayed.

Fig. 04

Reason
The OS runtime for the target station is not enabled.

Download changes is selected but cannot be executed - "Standby is not activated ..."
Although the "Changes" check box for defining the "Scope" of the download has been selected, the download procedure cannot be started because the "OK" button is disabled. The text "Standby is not activated. Load Online Changes is not possible." is displayed.

Fig. 05

Reason
This message appears in the case of a redundant pair of servers if OS runtime is enabled on the Master OS, but not on the Standby OS.

Download changes is selected but cannot be executed
Although the "Changes" check box for defining the "Scope" of the download has been selected, the download procedure cannot be started because the "OK" button is disabled. The text "A Load Online Change can only be started by the master not the standby." is displayed.

Fig. 06

Reason
This message only appears in the case of a redundant pair of servers if the "Changes" check box for defining the "Scope" of the download has been selected.
