Micro Automation: Flexible Decoding and Processing of Data Matrix Codes (MAS 27)
The SIMATIC S7-200 components used in this application example are currently phased out.
This application can be realized even more effective and easier with the new SIMATIC S7-1200.
The respective application example with SIMATIC S7-1200 is available under entry-ID: 40603943
Furthermore, many useful applications with SIMATIC S7-1200 are available under entry-ID: 35923253
The flow of goods in a middle-class company is to be monitored. The goods are to be captured at different points by means of a Data Matrix code scanner. The flow of goods in the company is as shown below.
To be able to trace the flow of goods, the goods are captured at the interfaces of the different departments with a Data Matrix code scanner. The flow of goods is recorded in a database. To keep the complexity of the Micro Automation Set low, only the incoming goods department is considered.
A HawkEye HE40 handheld code reader is connected to port 1 of the SIMATIC CPU 224XP via the RS232/PPI cable. The TD 400C text display is connected to port 0 of the CPU 224XP. The communication with the database is performed via Industrial Ethernet and is realized via the CP 243-1 communications processor and the “PC-Access” OPC server.
For the startup we offer you software examples with test code and test parameters as download. The software examples support you during the first steps and tests with your Micro Automation Sets. They enable quick testing of the hardware and software interfaces between the products described in the Micro Automation Sets.

Siemens provides products and solutions with industrial security functions that support the secure operation of plants, solutions, machines, equipment and/or networks. They are important components in a holistic industrial security concept. With this in mind, Siemens’ products and solutions undergo continuous development. Siemens recommends strongly that you regularly check for product updates.
For the secure operation of Siemens products and solutions, it is necessary to take suitable preventive action (e.g. cell protection concept) and integrate each component into a holistic, state-of-the-art industrial security concept. Third-party products that may be in use should also be considered. For more information about industrial security, visit
