How do you configure the RT Loader to transfer a WinCC flexible Runtime file from the configuration computer to a visualization PC?

This FAQ response lists the various settings you have to check to transfer a WinCC flexible Runtime file from a configuration PC ("source computer") to a visualization PC ("target computer") and to configure an automatic start of the Runtime when you start up the computer.


General

The following options are available for the transfer:

  • Serial - with a Siemens RS232 cable (MLFB: 6ES7 901-1BF00-0XA0)
  • USB - with a host-to-host USB cable
  • Ethernet - via a TCP/IP connection
  • MPI/PROFIBUS

First set up one of the above-mentioned connections between the configuration computer and the visualization PC.

Settings on the visualization PC (target computer)

Action

1 Start the RT Loader
Open the RT Loader via "Start > SIMATIC > WinCC flexible 200x Runtime > WinCC flexible Runtime Loader".
The RT Loader opens.
2 Settings
Click the "Settings" button.
The menu for the transfer and directory settings opens.

Description of the settings
  • Connection - Channel 1, serial
    Enable Channel 1 if the Runtime file is to be transferred by serial transfer to the visualization PC.
  • Connection - Channel 2
    Enable Channel 2 if the Runtime file is to be transferred by MPI (PROFIBUS), USB or Ethernet to the visualization PC.
  • Remote control option
    Check mark the "Remote Control" option if the visualization PC or the SIMATIC Panel is to change automatically from Runtime mode to Transfer mode.

Note
If the "Remote control" option is enabled, PC Runtime is terminated each time transfer is triggered on the configuration PC and project transfer is started. In normal plant operation, transfers might be triggered unintentionally and the PC Runtime terminated, which can lead to the plant becoming inoperable. Siemens emphatically recommends that you disable automatic transfer after commissioning the device. The transfer provides full access for all persons who can connect to the device. This includes the possibility of reading and changing all the stored information. The automatic transfer was developed on the assumption that the device is running in a protected industrial environment when the service is enabled.

  • Directories - Configuration file
    Here you specify a directory.
    The Runtime file "*.fwx" will be transferred later to this directory.
  • Directories - Back transfer file
    Here you specify a directory.
    If "Enable back transfer" is selected in the transfer settings on the configuration computer, when the project is transferred from the source format (*.hmi), it is compressed and transferred to this specified directory as a "*.pdz" file.
  • Directories - Start application automatically
    Here, you specify the directory in which the "HmiRtm.exe" file is located on your visualization PC. The path is usually specified by the system.
    WinCC flexible Runtime is started via "HmiRtm.exe" if there is a configuration in the configuration directory.
  • Directories - Wait
    Enter how many seconds the RT Loader remains displayed before the Runtime is started (1 s, 3 s, 5 s, 10 s or permanently).
  • Languages
    Set the user interface language for the RT Loader.
When you have made all the settings, confirm the inputs with the "OK" button.

3 Enable transfer
After making all the settings, press the "Transfer" button on the RT Loader.

This completes all the necessary settings on the visualization PC.

Transfer settings on the configuration PC (source computer)

Open the Transfer settings via "Project > Transfer > Transfer settings"
(alternatively you select the icon for Transfer settings).
  • Select one of the possible Transfer options (mode).
    • Serial
    • MPI/DP
    • USB
    • Ethernet
  • Assign the relevant address.
  • Enable other options if necessary.

Note
The transfer mode must be identical on both computers (configuration PC and visualization PC).

This completes all the necessary settings on the configuration computer.

Press the "Transfer" button to trigger the transfer.
The data is transferred into the directory that you specified before in the RT Loader on the visualization PC.

Incorporation of the RT Loader in the Autostart

Incorporate the RT Loader in the Autostart
Below we take an example to show how to incorporate the RT Loader in the Autostart.
  • Open the folder in which "HmiLoad.exe" (RT Loader) is installed.
    The file is located by default in
    "C:\Program Files\Siemens\SIMATIC WinCC flexible\WinCC flexible 200x Runtime\ HmiLoad.exe"
    (The path and designations might be slightly different depending on the installed language version of the operating system).
  • Right-click "HmiLoad.exe" and create a link via the menu item "Create link".
    Then copy this "Shortcut".
  • Open the "Startup" (Autostart) folder and paste the "Shortcut" copied before into this folder.
    The folder is located in this directory:
    "C:\Documents and Settings\User Name\Start Menu\Programs\Startup"

This completes the necessary settings.

Now, every time you start the computer, the RT Loader is started first and then the WinCC flexible Runtime via the RT Loader.

Incorporate the WinCC flexible Runtime file in the Autostart
You can also incorporate the Runtime file directly in the Autostart instead of the RT Loader.
In this case, you do not need the "RT Loader".
However, in this case, transfer cannot be triggered automatically.

Below, we take an example to show how to incorporate the Runtime file (*.fwx) in the Autostart.

  • Open the folder in which the WinCC flexible Runtime file (*.fwx) is located.
  • Right-click the *.fwx file and create a link via the menu item "Create link". Then copy this "Shortcut".
  • Open the "Startup" (Autostart) folder and paste the "Shortcut" copied before into this folder.
    The folder is located in this directory:
    "C:\Documents and Settings\User Name\Start Menu\Programs\Startup"

  • Via "Start > Programs > Startup" you can check whether the WinCC flexible Runtime file is located in the "Autostart".

This completes the necessary settings.
Now, the WinCC flexible Runtime file starts automatically each time the computer is started.

Manually copy the Runtime file "*.fwx" to the visualization PC

Instead of using the "Transfer" function, you can also copy the Runtime file directly to the visualization PC and start it via the RT Loader.
For this you proceed as follows.
  1. Copy the Runtime file "*.fwx" into the folder that you specified in the RT Loader under "Settings > Directories > Configuration file".
  2. Change the name of the file from "*.fwx" to "PDATA.fwx".
    Example: "Project_RT_01.Panel_1.fwx" => "PDATA.fwx"

This completes all the necessary settings on the visualization PC for manual incorporation of the Runtime file.

Note
The Runtime file "*.fwx" is created automatically on your configuration computer if you have previously started Runtime on it.
The Runtime file is located in the WinCC flexible project folder in which the "*.hmi" is located, for example.


Troubleshooting when transferring or starting Runtime

If no connection can be set up between the visualization PC and the configuration PC or the Runtime file does not start, check the following settings on the visualization PC:

Serial
Is the correct COM interface selected?

MPI (PROFIBUS)
Check the settings in the PG/PC interface:

  • PG/PC is the only master on the bus: enabled
  • Address: must be different on the configuration PC and the visualization PC
  • Baud rate: must be the same as on the configuration PC
  • Highest node address: must be the same as on the configuration PC
  • Bus terminating resistor: selected
  • Cable used: use PROFIBUS cable, for example

Ethernet
Check the connection parameters:

  • Computer name or IP address
  • SUB network
  • Cable used

Reaction to error messages
If an error message is displayed, you react as specified.

  • "No configuration available. Please trigger transfer."
    In the RT Loader, under "Directories - Configuration file", check the storage path specified and make sure that a Runtime file (PDATA.fwx) is located there.
  • "Error when starting WinCC flexible RT. Please repeat transfer."
    In the RT Loader, under "Directories - Start application automatically", check the storage path specified for "HmiRtm.exe".

Troubleshooting when transferring to the configuration PC

If no connection can be established between the configuration PC and the visualization PC, check the following settings on the configuration PC:

Serial

  • "Could not establish a connection."
    Check your settings, interfaces, cables, etc.
    Check the PG/PC interface, transfer settings, etc.
