Utilization of RFID systems in the PCS 7 environment

The Siemens SIMATIC RF is an innovative series of systems with a multitude of benefits. Contact-free data transmission is ideally suited for industrial applications and guarantees reliable and cost-effective identification. Standardized system integration enables quick and easy deployment in any application.

Today's world, such as in the pharmaceutical industry, is determined by standards, guidelines and legislation. At the fundamental level of these regulations are definitions of the requirements for the product manufacturing process and quality assurance.
The combination of automation technology and RFID technology offers a reliable and efficient solution for fulfilling these requirements. Thanks to the use of mobile data storage devices (MDS) in the manufacturing process, information regarding identification can be written and read contact-free and reliably using the RFID system.

In this example, the focus is directed towards monitoring mobile containers that are integrated into a process control system by means of an RFID system. The RFID components used for this can be integrated into SIMATIC PCS 7 and STEP 7 and are specifically designed for applications in an industrial environment.

The figure shows a possible configuration for the integration of an RFID-System in a PCS 7 environment.

This application example describes the configuration of a SIMATIC RF300 RFID at a S7-400.

Utilization of RFID system in PCS 7 V8.2, V9.x and higher versions
The integration in PCS 7 is done using an "FbIdent" interface block. The "FbIdent" transfers process and status data of a RFID reader for further use in the user program and for visualization.  

All nessesary blocks and templates are contained in the PCS 7 libary "PCS7_RFID_Ident_V82" and are valid for PCS 7 V8.2 or higher.

Utilization of RFID system in the PCS 7 V8.0 and V8.1
The integration in PCS 7 is done using an "RFID_IF" interface block, which is separately available for download as source code and in compiled format, integrated into a Demo Project. It forms the interface between the automation program and the RFID hardware.

The PCS 7 solution is based on the STEP 7 project for the MOBY_FB (FB45). This project is included in the demo project for the RFID_IF block. However, you can also obtain this STEP 7 project from the following entry 61199127.

The FB45 is a block for the ASM 475, ASM 456, RF170C and RF180C communications modules. The application example can thus be used with these RFID devices.
The demo projects have been created with the following software:

  • SIMATIC PCS 7 V8.1
  • SIMATIC PCS 7 V8.0 SP1 Upd1

This sample project cannot be used in conjunction with the connection of a reader of the type RF68xR to PCS 7 via PROFINET or PROFIBUS. In this case the ident profile has to be used. You will find the ident profile on entry: 109476945
