What do I need to be aware of with belt pulleys?

V-belt pulley and forces acting on V-belt

For a given motor, belt pulleys with the smallest possible diameter are the ideal, as these allow the driven pulley to be kept as small as possible. However, these result in increased transverse force on the motor shaft.

Belt pulleys should therefore always be slid up against the shaft shoulder of the motor in order to keep the bending fatigue load of the shaft as low as possible.

Only those kinds of belt pulleys on which the line of action of the transverse force lies within the free motor shaft extension may be used.
