QUESTION:

What relation is there between selecting a machine bearing and its coupling versions?

ANSWER / REMEDY / NOTES:

Motors with rolling-contact bearings always use an axial guide bearing (location bearing) and always require an axially flexible coupling due to the thermal expansion of the shafts.

Motors with sliding bearings are designed with two floating bearings as standard. The rotor is guided axially by the axial guide bearing of the machine or the gearbox. An axially limiting coupling is required so that the bearing shell in the motor bearing on the DE side does not axially run against the shaft shoulder.

The dimensions of the axial limitation are specified in the machine manual.

Motors with sliding bearings and axial guide bearing (special design) must have an highly axially flexible and highly elastic coupling due to the thermal expansion of the shafts.

Motors with cylindrical-roller bearing and coupling output

Couplings cause low radial loads.

Cylindrical-roller bearings on the other hand require a certain minimum load for a smooth rolling. If this minimum load is not applied, the bearings become noisy (screech) and wear prematurely.

Deep-groove ball bearings are therefore the preferred type of rolling-contact bearing for coupling outputs.

The use of motors with cylindrical-roller bearings on coupling outputs should always be clarified with the motor manufacturer.
