Reactors 4EM, 4ET, 4EP, 4EU under overlad conditions

QUESTION:

Can reactors 4EM, 4ET, 4EP, 4EU be operated with overload?


ANSWER:

Reactors cannot be overloaded continuously.

Short-time overcharges are permissible when the following conditions are adhered to: 

a)
The overload duration (SD) is ≤ 10 minutes.
SD > 10 minutes relates to continuous reactor operation.

b)
The effective current value during overload operation does not exceed the acceptable thermal steady current of the reactor.

c)
The overload current value do not exceed the 10 fold of the acceptable thermal steady current of the reactor. 

The reactors operate depending on their design more or less in saturation and will lose inductance if they are operated with more current than the rated current. 

Example:
4EU2452-4UA00-0AA0  3AC480V 80A 0,352mH

SD = 10 Minuten 
ILn = 80A
IL1 = 120 A
t1 = 1,5 min

IL2 = ?

t2 = 8,5 minutes

Taking the above form into consideration:

If the operation period only consisted of time t1 and t2 the reactor could be operated for 1,5 minutes with 1,5 fold thermal steady current.
In compensation the current would have to be reduced to 71 A for t2 = 8,5 minutes.
