WinAC MP 2008 Released for Delivery as from March 18, 2009

The WinAC MP 2008 software PLC will be released for delivery on March 18, 2009. WinAC MP 2008 executes on all MP 177, MP 277 and MP 377 panels. Cost competitive complete packages are available for the current Multi Panels.

The WinAC MP 2008 software PLC will execute on all SIMATIC HMI Multi Panels.
As is the case with our hardware CPUs, WinAC MP 2008 (V4.1.1) comes in different performance classes. A suitable WinAC MP performance class is available for each target platform, whereby WinAC MP177 approximately equals the performance of a CPU 313/314, and WinAC MP 377 that of a CPU 317. However, WinAC MP cannot be compared 1:1 with a hardware CPU!

WinAC MP 2008 was specially designed for Simatic HMI Multi Panels and has been further improved. It is now available as innovated software PLC with freely selectable performance. With its new timing response it now offers even more freedom with process optimization. Some of the major benefits of WinAC MP 2008 are:

  • Freely selectable load distribution between PLC and HMI
  • Use of well-known SIMATIC standard tools, such as WinCC flexible and STEP7. Existing programs can in general be re-used
  • Robustness similar to a hardware CPU (retentive memory for data, flags, timers and counters already integrated in the MultiPanel hardware)
  • Backup/Restore at the stroke of a button thanks to sophisticated service concept (all data, HMI incl. PLC, on a standard SD card, Multi Media card or USB stick)
  • CFC/SCL Programming supported
  • ProAgent and Step7 Graph can now also be used (except on MP 177 6" Touch)
  • Space-saving because the PLC CPU is a software on the MultiPanel
  • Optimal price/performance ratio especially for small and medium-sized systems and machines
  • Large scope of functions similar to that of a hardware CPU
  • Performance optimized with ready-to-run pre-loaded software; easy to use
  • ET 200 Standard components can be used for modular expansion via Profibus-DP.

  • The combination of proven WinAC RTX and robust Simatic HMI Multi Panel hardware makes WinAC MP 2008 a genuine alternative to hardware CPUs.

WinAC MP 2008 is a good alternative when new cost-optimized applications have to be implemented. Nevertheless not all hardware CPU applications can be replaced 1:1. The application and the limiting conditions have to be thorougly checked in each case!

In the medium and long term our multi-functional platforms with WinAC MP 2008 will replace the proven Simatic C7units. Compared to the C7 units our Multi Panels can offer a better innovation cycle ensuring that hard and software are always state of the art.

Preconditions and application areas for WinAC MP 2008:
The WinAC MP 2008 software is loaded to a MultiPanel as an option and in addition to the HMI application. A hardware CPU is no longer required in this case!
WinAC MP 2008 requires WinCC flexible 2008 SP1 and Step7 V5.4 SP4.

WinAC MP 2008 is suitable for all applications where the response time need not be faster than 15 ms. The I/Os are connected via Profibus-DP; the response time terminal-to-terminal can be further improved by using High Feature modules. High Feature modules offer additional advantages with diagnostics in the case of a problem (see also indication of system errors).
In order to optimally organize time-critical processes it is necessary to understand the working principle of a software PLC, because the operation differs from that of a hardware CPU.
The working principle is described below.

The above diagram shows a complete cycle of a WinAC MP 2008. This cycle can be interrupted at any time by the time or process OB. The HMI ENABLE TIME is freely adjustable. This parameter enables you to freely adjust the time sharing between WinAC MP and HMI.

The following Profibus modules have been released for configuration of high-performance technological functions:

- All ET 200 standard modules plus
- FM 350-1      Counter module
- FM 350-2      8-channel counter module
- FM 351         Positioning module
- FM 352         Cam controller
- FM 353         Stepper drive
- FM 354         Servo drive
- FM 355         PID controller
- FM 355-2     Temperature controller
- FM 352-5     Boolean processor

Please note: A MultiPanel that is already operating at its performance limit is not a good basis for use with a software PLC, because the software PLC and the HMI unit have to share the common microprocessor. The next larger MultiPanel platform should be considered in this case. The extra costs for the MultiPanel platform will usually be compensated by the saving on the CPU side.

Additional features available with WinAC MP 2008:
A Softbus will be installed in the MultiPanel together with the WinAC MP 2008 option; it provides various routing functionalities:

Routing from Ethernet to Profibus (please note: HMI stations cannot be addressed)

Routing via Profibus-DP

CPU-to-CPU communication from, with and via WinAC MP 2008

Two ready-made screens are integrated in the WinCC flexible system library for the purpose of operator input and control of the WinAC MP 2008. These screens can be copied and changed at will in customized projects.
All the functions required to control a WinAC MP 2008 can be individually configured after installation of the option on the configuration computer.

Upgrade :
WinAC MP 2007 customers can upgrade their software PLC free of charge. The license key of WinAC MP 2007 will continue to function. WinAC MP 2008 can be downloaded from the following address:

To be able to use WinAC MP on the control panel, the following installation sequence and preconditions are mandatory for the configuration computer:
1. Windows XP SP2 operating system (Windows Vista is not released)
2. STEP 7 V5.4 SP 4 or higher must be installed
2. WinCC flexible 2008 SP1 must be installed
3. WinAC MP 2008 (V4.1.1) must be installed

After you have downloaded the EXE file please start the EXE. A folder will be created on drive "C:" in which all files necessary for the installation will be unpacked. Please read the Readme and then start the file SETUP. WinAC MP will then be installed as if you had started the installation directly from the original CD/DVD.

Please note: we recommend that you always unistall the old programs first.
