How can you display the system messages and outputs on the system console?
ANSWER:
You can use HyperTerminal, the Windows95 program, to display system messages and outputs on the system console.
You find HyperTerminal via Start-Programs-Accessories-HyperTerminal. However, HyperTerminal is not installed with a standard installation of Windows95. In this case you must install the program specifically via Control Panel-Software in the Windows setup. The HyperTerminal is located in the "Connections" component.
After calling HyperTerminal you have to make the following settings:
- Select COM interface (of the PG/PC).
- Connection settings: 19200 bits/sec, 8 data bits, no parity, 1 stop bit, no protocol.
- Set Terminal in the View-Font menu.
- The display is made only if the connection is active (connect call = telephone symbol).
The cable connector is configured as follows when using two 9-pole sockets:

The system messages are only output if the following entries are active in the INITTAB file in the ETC directory:
SET INITDEV=BYT
SET INITUNIT=BYT_COM1
SET TRACE_MESSAGE=YES
The line is commented out with the # character.
The system console must be routed to the COM1 in the RMOS.INI file. You do this by changing the entry sysdev=NONE to sysdev=BYT_COM1. In the RMOS/DOS or RMOS/WIN operating system you must also reserve the COM1 for RMOS by making the entry RESERVE_COM1 in the [RMOS-DOS] section.
After the test and start-up phase you should undo the changes in the INITTAB and RMOS.INI, because outputs on the serial interface reduce the system's performance.
