How resistant to chemicals are the SIMATIC HMI operator panels and Industrial PCs?

Information about the chemical resistance of the fronts/surfaces of our SIMATIC HMI operator panels.

The integrity of the panel front is an important criterion for ensuring the function of our panels. If environmental influences or chemical substances affect the panel front this can lead to swelling, flaking, dissolving and alteration of the panel front materials. This can also go as far as to render the panel inoperable.
To prevent this SIMATIC HMI operator panels are subjected to diverse tests, some of which are prescribed by standards. If there are no functional standards, Siemens defines what is tested and how.
The test results for SIMATIC HMI devices are given in the attached table and can be different for each panel.

  • What is tested
    Everything that is outside the control cabinet is tested. This includes device seals, housing front, front decor foil/touch foil or glass front as well as the adhesives used to hold the components together.
  • How is testing done
    From the following test conditions you can see which tests have been made on which devices. The results are given in the attached table.
    The test duration and prevailing temperature are listed in the test conditions along with the test substances. Special cases are indicated by footnotes.
  • What happens if a test substance is missing
    If a test substance is missing, it is often useful to use the results of another substance with similar chemical properties in the test conditions.
  • Customer-specific tests of other chemicals
    If a substance is not listed here, it is possible to have it tested at a charge. Get in touch with your Siemens contact about this. The costs vary depending on the time and effort, number of substances, number of test items, as well as the transport and procurement/disposal of the chemicals/test items. The costs are typically €1000 to €1500 per test, substance and temperature.

The PDF file lists all the devices whose fronts (consisting of the decor foil, plastic, seal and touch foil (on Touch devices) or glass front) have been tested and whose fronts have the same front properties as reference devices.

Note on Covid-19: How can the spread of viruses via the front panel of panels be reduced or minimized?
Here are some tips:

  • It is advisable to use protective films for submersible devices. These can also be cleaned with non-approved agents. If these then show signs of failure, they can be replaced.
  • For touch devices, a touch pen can be used as an alternative (see our touch pen system 6AV2181-8AV20-0AX0). The touch pen from the touch pen system is for both capacitive and resistive touch screens. The touch pen can also be used to operate keys on key panels. The touch pen system consists of 99.99% aluminum and can be cleaned with most disinfectants.
  • Furthermore, gloves can also be used with resistive touch systems and key devices. For capacitive touch systems (typical for glass fronts), thin latex or medical gloves may be used. However, special gloves for capacitive touch surfaces can also be used here.
    Warning: Using tools such as screwdrivers, pliers or others can lead to the destruction of the user interface or extremely limit the service life.
  • Substances that have not yet been tested can also be retested. But please note that these tests can take up to 4 months and each substance can cost approx. €1000 to €2000.
    You can request a quote for this from your Siemens contact person. Alternatively, you can also order the tests directly from TÜV or LGA. For this purpose, however, you yourself must provide the substances and the testing equipment.
  • A simple soap solution or standard detergent can also be used for damp and careful cleaning without damaging the panel fronts.

1) 10 cycles over a total period of 72 hours: Spray on, then leave to dry.

Adhesives do not have a long-term resistance to aggressive substances.
The fronts were exposed to the substances for a period of 72 hours. A statement about permanent exposure of the devices to substances cannot be made. The test results are based on a test period as specified in the tables.
The resistance of devices with glass front to aggressive substances is greater than that of devices with similar resistive front.

2. Single gas test in compliance with DIN EN 60068-2-42 Substances for HMI Devices
Only the fronts (consisting of the decor foil, plastic, seal and touch foil (on Touch devices) or glass front)  were tested, not the complete devices.
