When you open STEP 7 Professional / Basic, why do you get the request to install the license even though you have installed the license?

  • Entry
  • Associated product(s)
Most probably you have not installed the right license for your software version.

Check whether you have the correct license for your version of STEP 7 installed on your PC. A license is always valid for one product.

  • For example, if you have procured the license for STEP 7 Basic V15.1 and you upgrade to STEP 7 Professional V15.1, you then need the PowerPack with the floating license.
  • Or, for example, if you upgrade STEP 7 Professional V14 to STEP 7 Professional V15.1, then you need the Upgrade Combo floating license.

However, the license for STEP 7 (TIA Portal) V15.1 is also backward compatible. For example, with this license you can also open the previous version V14 of the same product.Fig. 1 shows an example for a series of installed licenses. Each license is only ever valid for one product with the specified version. After installing STEP 7 V5.6, for example, you also need a license for STEP 7 version V5.6 if you want to open the SIMATIC Manager. With STEP 7 V5.3 and higher the licenses for STEP 7 V5.x are automatically also valid for the earlier versions of the same software.

If, before the SIMATIC Manager opens, you get the message indicating that no valid license key can be found,

  • then either you have not installed a license
  • or you have installed a license that is not valid for your version of STEP 7.

Without a valid license you can only open STEP 7 if you activate the Trial License (valid for a limited time). After that time you can open STEP 7 again only if you have transferred the license required for your version of STEP 7 to your PC. You install the license via the ALM (Automation License Manager). The following table gives you an overview of software product versions.

You can install the licenses when installing the software products or later, and also uninstall them again. You can store licenses on the following media:

  • USB sticks
  • License key floppy disks (for STEP 7 V5.x)
  • Local hard disk memories
  • Hard disk memories of computers in the network

When you uninstall die TIA Portal products, the associated licenses are also uninstalled if the licenses have been installed from the installation data media along with the product. You should backup any licenses you need before uninstalling the products. If the licenses have been installed from a USB stick, they are not uninstalled when you uninstall the software but remain on the partition where they were stored.

You can check whether the license required for your software is installed in the ALM (Fig. 1). If the license is installed, you get the value "1" in the "Number of license keys" column.

The ALM is supplied together with the project on the installation medium and is installed automatically during installation of the product. However, when you uninstall the software products, the ALM is not uninstalled automatically with them, because the ALM is used for managing the license keys of multiple Siemens products.
