  • Associated product(s)

Version 6.1 of the SIMATIC PDM Process Device Manager is now released for delivery. The special features of SIMATIC PDM V6.1 are: numerous new and improved functions, updated device descriptions, plus integration of additional field devices.

1 Product description

1.1 Classification/Application area

SIMATIC PDM is by now firmly established on the market as a universal, non-proprietary tool for configuring, parameterizing, commissioning, diagnosing and maintaining intelligent field devices (sensors and actuators) and field components (remote I/Os, multiplexers, control room devices, compact controllers). With more than 2000 device descriptions for a range of devices from more than 200 manufacturers worldwide, SIMATIC PDM has one of the largest library of all parameterization tools available on the market. Version 6.1 further expands the number of supported devices and also extends, rounds off and improves the functionality, performance and ease of operation of SIMATIC PDM.

In the context of SIMATIC PCS 7 you can also use SIMATIC PDM V7.0 instead of SIMATIC PDM V6.1. However, for projects without "FOUNDATION Fieldbus" communication we recommend the use of SIMATIC PDM V6.1.

1.2 Product features

Performance, Ease of Operation and Functions

  • The operator interface and the control functions are comparable with SIMATIC PDM V6.0 + SP5
  • Enabling of the print function in SIMATIC PDM Single Point now permits printing out the parameter overview with this product variant as well
  • In addition to the HART revisions 5 and 6, all relevant commands and functions of HART revision 7 are now supported
  • Diagnosis and parameterization of HART field devices with Wireless-HART communication by integration of the HART OPC server V3.2 and support of the HART revision 7
  • Acceleartion of the HART communication by means of SHC-Mode, based on the "HART on PROFIBUS" specification of the PROFIBUS & PROFINET International organization.
    • SHC-Mode depends on the hardware used

SIMATIC PDM Option Routing via S7-400

For overall plant configuration, parameterization, commissioning and diagnosis of the field devices you also require the option "SIMATIC PDM Routing via S7-400", in addition to the option "SIMATIC PDM Integration in STEP 7/PCS 7". It enables processing each field device that can be parametrized with EDD via the various bus systems and remote I/Os, from a central engineering system.

SIMATIC PDM Option Communication via Standard HART Multiplexer

This option enables SIMATIC PDM to use the HART-OPC Server for the communication with HART field devices via HART Multiplexer.

1.5 TAG Options / PowerPacks

One TAG corresponds to one SIMATIC PDM object, representing individual field devices or field components within one project, e.g. measuring devices, positioners, switching devices or remote I/Os. TAGs are also of relevance for the diagnosis with the Lifelist of SIMATIC PDM. All identified devices capable of diagnosis, whose detailed diagnosis has ben implemented via the device description (EDD), are counted as TAGs in this case.

PowerPacks enable the SIMATIC PDM product range (except SIMATIC PDM Single Point V6.1) to be equipped with additional TAGs. PowerPacks are available for the TAG expansion to 512, 1 024, 2 048 and unlimited TAGs.

In contrast to PowerPacks, the TAG options are only suitable for individual SIMATIC PDM product configurations, starting from the SIMATIC PDM Basic V6.1 basic module. The SIMATIC PDM TAG options enable SIMATIC PDM Basic V6.1 to be expanded from 4 TAGs to 128, 512, 1 024 or 2 048 TAGs, and, with the aid of an additive PowerPack for SIMATIC PDM V6.1, to unlimited TAGs.

1.6 Demo software

1.7.2 Compatibility of the device descriptions

In principle, the device descriptions previously used with SIMATIC PDM V6.0 + SP5 will also work with SIMATIC PDM V6.1. However, adaptations in the international standards and specifications have lead to changes in the basic libraries of SIMATIC PDM. The Device Library 1#2011 included with SIMATIC PDM V6.1 integrates the following updated or corrected libraries of international organizations:

  • EDD Library V2.0 of PROFIBUS & PROFINET International
  • Device Library 04/2010 of the HART Communication Foundation (HCF)

Due to the fact that many device descriptions make use of these libraries, it is necessary to at least newly import the device descriptions of the field devices used in the projects. As a result of the adaptations, error messages can appear in isolated cases with the interpretation of device descriptions in which non-changeable texts are included. In these cases please contact the relevant device manufacturer to obtain an update of the device description concerned. We will publish separate bulletins on the topic of changes/updates of the Device Library 1#2011.

1.7.3 Hardware compatibility

The compatibility of SIMATIC PDM V6.1 with communication processors (CPs) for PROFIBUS, Industrial Ethernet and HART communication has not been checked explicitly.
