1 Product Information

1.1 General Product Features/Overview

 

Electrical switching stations distribute or transform electrical power, whereby the loads/consumers are bundled into load groups. Network junctions in the form of busbars interconnect incoming and outgoing power lines by means of switchgear, the so-called branch lines. The design of such a switching station must also take into account changes of the network topology in the case of faults, as well as isolation and earthing of equipment for maintenance work.

In the past, plants for the automation of electrical switching stations for the power supply of the process were always strictly separate from the process automation plant. SIMATIC PCS 7 PowerControl now enables the combination of the process automation and the automation of the electrical switching station for medium voltage in the range from 4 to 30 kV, in one control system.

Intelligent Electronic Devices (IEDs) - e.g SIPROTEC protection units or interoperable third-party devices - are used in the automation of switching stations, i.e. for protection, control, measurement and monitoring tasks in electrical power transmission and distribution. These can be integrated in the SIMATIC PCS 7 process control system via Ethernet TCP/IP communication with IEC 61850 transmission protocol.

1.3 Design

 

The IEC 61850 transmission protocol for protection and control in electrical switching stations supports the data exchange between the process control systems and IEDs with the Manufacturing Messaging Specification (MMS) and the fast realtime communication between the IEDs with Generic Object Oriented Substation Events (GOOSE).

The IED integration into the process control system is thus possible as follws:
