Communication via OPC UA with SIMATIC HMI systems (Comfort Panels, Runtime Advanced, Runtime Professional)
In the automation world, there are various, often vendor-dependent, communication interfaces. Nevertheless, systems and devices from different manufacturers have to exchange their data with each other. OPC UA is a cross-vendor standard that allows field devices to communicate with each other.
Many SIMATIC HMI systems support the communication via OPC UA. The application examples show various configurations for this purpose. An example project is available for each configuration.
The figure below shows a schematic illustration of the most important components for the
"02 - Panel Server and RT Advanced Client" configuration.
The Comfort Panel (server) provides the data. The PC station (client) accesses the data (tags) of the Comfort Panel.
The OPC UA communication interface supports data integrity through encryption and digital signature.

Siemens provides products and solutions with industrial security functions that support the secure operation of plants, systems, machines and networks. To protect plants, systems, machines and networks against cyber threats, it is necessary to implement (and continuously maintain) a holistic, state-of-the-art Industrial Security concept. Products and solutions from Siemens are only one part of such a concept. It is the customer’s responsibility to prevent unauthorized access to the customer’s plants, systems, machines and networks. Systems, machines and components should only be connected with the company’s network or the Internet, when and insofar as this is required and the appropriate protective measures (for example, use of firewalls and network segmentation) have been taken. In addition, the recommendations by Siemens regarding the respective protective measures have to be observed. For more information on industrial security, visit http://www.siemens.com/industrialsecurity.
Siemens’ products and solutions undergo continuous development to make them even more secure. Siemens strongly recommends to carry out updates as soon as the respective updates are available and always only to use the current product versions. Use of product versions that are no longer supported, and failure to apply latest updates may increase customer’s exposure to cyber threats. In order to always be informed about product updates, subscribe to the Siemens Industrial Security RSS Feed at http://www.siemens.com/industrialsecurity.
