Building Automation: House Control with LOGO! 8 and Master-Slave Communication (LOGO! Set 9)

The LOGO! 8 controller together with further LOGO! 8 controllers is used to control and monitor various functions in houses or other buildings. A smartphone can be used to monitor and control the house functions via WLAN.

Task
The aim is to individually automate the functions of a building with a controller. This application uses an example to show how to realize an automatic house control.
The following functions shall be controlled manually or automatically:

  • Blinds
  • Roof hatch
  • Interior and exterior lighting including panic switch
  • Heating
  • Garden watering

Solution
In this automation task, a vast number of signal must be processed. This requires the use of several LOGO! controllers. A LOGO! (master) controller is connected to other (slave) LOGO! controllers and is thus able to connect additional inputs and outputs to the master controller with master-slave communication. This enables substantial expansion of a LOGO! controller. This example of the house control is used to explain interconnection and expansion of the inputs and outputs of the LOGO! simply and easy to understand. Because of the integrated Webserver of the LOGO! controller, the house functions can be monitored and controlled via WLAN with a mobile device (smartphone, tablet) or a PC.

The automation solution fulfills the following operating requirements:
  • Controlling and monitoring a house controller with a mobile device (smartphone, tablet) via WLAN on the integrated webserver of LOGO! 8
  • Operating a house controller with buttons, the LOGO! display and the LOGO! TDE
  • Time-based control of blinds and garden watering in automatic mode
  • Temperature-based control of heating and roof windows in automatic mode
  • Display of the status of the relevant house function on the LOGO! display in the distributor box and on an external text display (LOGO! TDE)
  • Light pushbutton with integrated panic function and central pushbutton for switching off all lights
