Why is it possible that the temperature range specified on the device rating plate on SIPLUS modules differs from the temperatures specified on the data sheet?

According to the UL/FM/ATEX approvals it is necessary to adapt the temperature class of SIPLUS extreme to the temperature class of BasedOn in order to extend the field of application compared to BasedOn and enable a 1:1 exchange.

Description
The data sheets include the approved operating temperatures. The figure below shows an excerpt from the data sheet of the module SIPLUS S7-300 CPU 315-2PN/DP (article no.: 6AG1315-2EH14-7AB0).

From the technical point of view, this product is released for the temperature range of -25°C to +70°C, which is also specified on the delivery documents, for example.

Note
The temperature restriction is only necessary for applications that have to meet the UL/FM/ATEX requirements.

With these products the approved temperature range must be specified on the rating plate.

  • Here it is always the most restrictive range that is relevant for the approval.
  • This is usually the UL approval and so the temperature specification is part of the UL label.
  • In this example then it is the specification of the maximum temperature of +70°C that is reduced to +60°C.

For use at high altitudes the restrictions according to the "Extended ambient conditions" are valid (Fig. 1).

The reduction of the maximum temperature by 10K and 20K respectively is necessary, because at these altitudes the air density is lower because there are less air molecules for heat dissipation. +Therefore cooling of the module is reduced.
