Time synchronization between an HMI and a SIMATIC PLC

Depending on the required time synchronization and the SIMATIC controller used, this article shows the appropriate solution.

Introduction
In order for components, such as HMI operator interfaces and SIMATIC controllers of a system to work with an identical time, one of the listed components must be a timer for all other components.

  • The component acting as a timer is referred to as the time master.
  • The time receiving components are the time slaves.

Time synchronization is essential, for example, in the following fields of application:

  • Data recording and data storage
  • Alarms
  • Shift protocols
  • Energy data management

For a better overview, this application example is divided into three parts:

Time synchronization between an HMI operator interface and a SIMATIC PLC

The example project shows the respective possibilities of clock synchronization and their programmatic implementation.

A distinction is made between the following synchronization types:

  • HMI clock synchronization (master)
  • HMI clock synchronization (slave)
  • Area pointer: Date/time
  • Area pointer: Date/time PLC
  • Area pointer: Control order 14 and 15

The example project deals with two tasks:

  1. For the first task, an HMI user interface is to be the timing component.
    (HMI operating unit → SIMATIC control).
  2. In the second task, a SIMATIC controller is to be the timing component.
    (SIMATIC controller → HMI operator interface).

An example project is stored for each synchronization type.

Time synchronization between WinCC Runtime Professional and a SIMATIC PLC

The clock time of a higher-level Industrial PC (time master) is transferred to all connected devices (time slaves).

The sample project covers two tasks, depending on the hardware used:

  1. The adjustment of time and date is carried out via interface variables.

  2. The time and date are compared using the NTP protocol. 

The description applies to the following SIMATIC controllers and HMI operator interfaces:

  • SIMATIC controllers
  • SIMATIC S7-1200
