The Standard PCS 7 and WinCC/S7 Water Templates provide tailor-made templates for realizing small as well as more complex plants for the water industry. The templates are pre-configured and contain all typical components, their open- and closed-loop controls, required logics, interlocks and visualizations.

The main focus of the water industry lies on these sectors:

  • Drinking water
  • Wastewater
  • Desalination
  • Irrigation
  • Water transport

The water industry is closely connected to our environment. During its process-related processing it presents technical as well as economic and environmental requirements.
The reduction of servicing and maintenance times as well as the cost savings in planning, engineering, commissioning and training are just as important as the total costs incurred during the entire life cycle of an investment (Total Cost of Ownership = TCO).

The technical requirements are focused on scalable solutions. The Standard PCS 7 and WinCC/S7 Water Templates provide the possibility to create solutions with CPU S7 IM151-8/S7-300/S7-400/-410(E) hardware in SIMATIC PCS 7 as well as in WinCC/STEP 7.
High availability is guaranteed at all times and at all levels. The implementation of reliable instrumentation as well as the simple integration of energy distributions, drives, shifters, valves and frequency converters have also been taken into consideration.
Even the connections of decentralized structures (pump stations, sewer systems, water storage, storage channels, rain water collection basins, etc.) via remote control technology (TeleControl for PCS 7/-WinCC) e.g. via SINAUT ST7 protocol is an additional important aspect.

The core of the Standard PCS 7 and WinCC/S7 Water Templates is made up of three standard libraries:

  • SIMATIC PCS 7 Advanced Process Library (APL) alternative
  • SIMATIC WinCC/STEP 7 incl. SIMATIC S7 CFC option package 
  • SIMATIC PCS 7-/S7 Industry Library (IL)

To extend the functionality, the following components and libraries are used:

  • SIMATIC PCS 7 PowerControl (Switchgear automation with PCS 7)
  • SIMATIC PCS 7 TeleControl (Controlling of distributed process areas)
  • SITRANS Library (Integration of SITRANS field devices in PCS 7)
  • SITOP Library (Integration of 24V Power supplies in PCS 7)


The predefined water-specific templates are composed of various technological modules and are based on the recommendations of the NAMUR NE33 and ISA S88.1 standards.

The standard PCS 7 and WinCC/S7 Water Templates focus mainly on their use by communal or private system operators in the water industry. Sub-systems in the chemical, pharmaceutical, paper, mining or food and beverage industries can be also integrated together with their specific industrial water systems.
