Determining the transmission time for typical RFID configurations between S7 stations and transponder

SIMATIC offers a versatile range of RFID systems for effective identification in production technology. In order to make the right choice in the concept phase of an RFID system, it is important to be able to assess the communication performance of a planned SIMATIC configuration.

Important questions in selecting the right components in this context are:

  • Which SIMATIC S7 components are best suited for the planned automation project?
  • What transmission times can be expected from the transponder to the SIMATIC controller in typical configurations and systems?
  • What statistical fluctuations can occur?
  • What effect does the communication have on the cycle (OB1) of an S7 controller?

To answer the above questions, measurements were carried out on typical, practice-relevant configurations with SIMATIC RFID components.

The focus of these measurements is on measuring the runtime of a data package by the entire system. This means from the S7 station to the RFID transponder!

 Transmission time - RFID ReadTime between triggering a read job and the positive acknowledgement at the communication block in the S7 CPU
 Transmission time - RFID WriteTime between triggering a write job and the positive acknowledgement at the communication block in the S7 CPU
 Inventory timeTime between the triggering and the positive acknowledgement at the communication block in order to acquire n transponder in the reading field of the UHF reader. (Only relevant for RF680R UHF reader) 
 Cycle time S7 CPU Time between two cycles in S7 controller
 PN IO update time Update time of the PN IO string (is accepted from the configuration in the TIA portal)
