somehow this way does not work with the image V2.6 (see here). 

You need to use another way to hash the password: 

 

• cd /usr/lib/node/node-red
• node -e "console.log(require('bcrypt').hashSync(process.argv[1], 8));" your-password

i did all the steps and by the login in node red shows login failed

with image 3.1.1 it also works like this. 

Here are steps to do:

1. cd /usr/lib/node/node-red
2. node -e "console.log(require('bcrypt').hashSync(process.argv[1], 8));" your-password
   
3. Save the genareated hash-code
4. cd /home/root/.node-red
5. nano settings.js
6. Search for the following lines and uncomment them and insert username and hash-code
   adminAuth: {
   type: "credentials",
   users: [{
   username: "<username>",
   password: "<hash-code>",
   permissions: "*"
   }]
   },
7. Restart the IOT2040

Now node-red asks for username and password and logging in works.
