The G2 is DOA for me (in the current format) because of not having PTO for motion control. But there is slight hope in a document you missed (see picture). PTO in motion control is planned.

Unfortunately no date has been specified. It is also not known if a new hardware base is required (like S7-1200 FW:V3.0 to FW:V4.0).

Hello, many thanks for your fast answer. So my understanding was right… I'm also struggling with a G1+TIA portal (pro and expensive considering what I use it for) to use V90 drives in profinet mode, and the compatibility of the firmwares with the HSPs is far from easy. I should have considered V90 in pulse mode… but as I saw that G2 was not handling that mode anymore. A bit disappointing for an otherwise very nice environment, and scary if they kill the G1 without introducing the PTO in G2.

I would be forced to use something like the Rockwell's Micro800 if Siemens kills G1 before G2 is ready. It is more and more a struggle to convince clients to keep using Siemens (my preferred brand).

Why do you think you need Step7 Professional to handle the Sinamics V90 drives? That is not the case, as far as I know.

Problem is Siemens support says in FAQs that you should have "Step7 Professional" installed. The reason for that is that there is no "Step7 Basic" installation anymore. The "Step7 Basic" license makes the "Step7 Professional" installation work with the "Step7 Basic" functionality.

Do me a favour.. go back to the FAQ that brought you under the impression that you need "Step7 Professional". Post a comment about that.. something like "Why is the Step7 Basic license not good enough?". Please let me know the result.

We do not use Siemens drives because of how expensive they are in the territories we supply to. 
The drives are also not so readily available for just in time project and servicing schedules.
The local Siemens representatives are not up to date about the micro drives.

Hello, I could open the sample with my V18 basic. It includes a v90 pn device. My drive and cpu are properly detected.

But I cannot connect the drive as configured in the project. I think it does not match my brand new drives.

And when I try to pick up from the HSP list, I got the 'no pro license detected' message.

When I do the same with my V16 pro, I don't have the error, the drive is inserted in the project but I have firmware compatibility issues. So I believe the only solution I have is to upgrade to 20 pro.

I should have bought a simple chinese pulse driven model for 10 times less….

What you describe does not make sense to me. You are not suppose to need the Pro license. I have seen issues like that before on earlier Step7 version that was fixed by updates. I can only wonder if it is not this kind of situation.

There is no sense in using the S7-1200 G1 or G2 and then needing to have Step7 Pro license. Commercially it is a sound idea to have a lower level license that is more affordable. It encourage people to buy the license rather to use a cracked license.

I am having trouble with simulating the S7-1200 G2 in TIA Portal V20. It is asking for a Step7 V20 Professional license and a PLCSIM Advanced V20 license. (In the past you could even simulate an S7-1500 without needing to use PLCSIM Advanced.)

A new S7-1200 G2 based system would also need a Wincc Unified license -- even when using a Wincc Unified Basic panel. 

Expensive licenses for a product (G2) that is not finished in development. Not even the documentation within Step7 V20 is complete yet when it comes to the S7-1200 G2. Siemens will not have a ready for market PLC for the micro automation market if the S7-1200 G1 is discontinued.

Do you have TIA Portal V21 and are using the latest FW (v4.1) for the S7-1200 G2?  If so, you may not be as unhappy.  I do believe even with the older firmware, G2's could do PTO, but not PWM.

Search these forums for S7-1200 G2 and PWM and you may find the answer was to wait for the new firmware (which was released this week).

I ordered a G2 PLC for my new project. However, I just realized it does not support pulse output for servo drives, which is a big issue because all the servo drives I use in the field require pulse input.

I’m really surprised Siemens decided to remove this essential feature. It creates serious limitations for users like me who rely on pulse-driven servos.

Honestly, this design choice brings nothing but customer dissatisfaction and potential loss. Why would Siemens make it harder for loyal users instead of offering backward-compatible or flexible solutions?

Is there any alternative solution to use G2 PLCs with pulse-input servo drives?
