The particular CPU417-4 part number I'm concerned is 6ES7 417-4XT05-0AB0. It is available in the catalog of PCS7 V10.0 but is not included in "Released Modules" document that's why I want to confirm if it can still be used after upgrading the PCS7 version.

It's direct successor 417-4XT07-0AB0 is in the document, weirdly it's predecessor, though already discontinued, is also in the document 417-4XL00-0AB0, so I'm not actually sure why it's not included..

But I was told the rule of thumb about compatibility is if the hardware is part of the particular PCS7 version catalog, it must be supported, is that correct?

Officially we have to go by the published list, even tech support may give you some issues with support.

Unofficially, it should work fine. However that controller has different performance limitations with new(er) versions of APL blocks and communications so caution should be exercised when using anything that is not an AS410 in combination with APL moving forward.  If you have upgraded the APL version along with your project, then you should be checking the system performance before placing into operation and have contingency for alternate path.  (rollback, replace with AS410, etc.)

Did I understand the released document correctly, that basically all the controller listed are compatible with PCS7 v10 (since they all have "W" legend)?

That would include the ones with considerably lower spec than my CPU417-4 (some are even discontinued). Which makes me wonder perhaps the non-inclusion of 417-4 was just minor mistake.

Also, can you expand on the possible issue of using the latest APL Library with controller lower than CPU410?
