It can be connected directly to a bunch of S7-1200 modules and with pre-installed node-red you can forward data via mqtt. Just small detail.. The S7-1200 is able to communicate with several protocols via the Ethernet port, at the "same" time. Communicating with another Ethernet based communication does not exclude the Profinet protocol to link to remote I/O (as example). Siemens state that the communication port on the S7-1200 is a "Profinet" port. in the strict sense it is an Ethernet port that is certified for Profinet communications.
