Anchobi Posts: 139 Rating: (25)	What is the fastest and efficient way to do a cross reference search? For instance while programming I want to check usage of %I2.5 or DB10.DBX5.2 I am still too used to using Step7 5.5 and the goto function. Even in step 5 you can do a search for a particular address and pull up the info 2-3 seconds starting from the moment you press F2. e.g F2 twice then type address and bingo. I find it a little slow and cumbersome to pull up the cross references for the specific DB or IO table. e.g click on the DB then press F8 then navigate to the address location and then open up 2 levels to find specific use. if the DB is heavily populated then there is additional processing time each time to generate the table. There is a nice feature in TIA portal and that is the Cross reference tab under the Info tab which quickly brings up cross references of the addressed logical elements you have selected on the page. this is fast enough for me. Except that you need reference there on the current page to access it. If only there was a field to enter the address there and display that cross refference instead of the selected item. I am new to TIA portal and am slowly trying to become more efficient in using it as it is the Future of Siemens automation. There is much i dont know about using this software. I would like to know how others are programming with it.

There is a menu option in V11 to do cross references. For a DB, you can often right-click on the DB from the project tree to get a cross reference. You can do similar for a plc tag table.

You can do similar for a plc tag table. I am using V11 SP2 Upd2 (Thanks J_Bell) And am currently reviewing code in my first 1200. I have been using the tree. (instead of right click i left click and press F8) I also use the Info tab -> Cross reference tab But access to desired cross referecnes of adresses not on the current page is not as fast as I like to work. Also I have noticed that when using the tree to get the cross reference for DBs I dont get any cross references for structure elements. Am I missing something?

Click that, then you see all the xref for the structure within the DB. Look at the individual items in the DB and some or all will have >'s. Expand them all with a window icon (hover over the options to find the one that does it). The portal getting started section of the help system describes more about the interface and the icons and the cross reference options.

Only problem is that it does not work as it should. I have opened support case for that and Siemens developement team is working on the issue I think already for several months. I hope at least hot fix will be released soon and we will be able to use goto as it was in Step-7. By the way, cross reference tab at the bottom was also available in Step-7. Sometimes its very handy, but it can't replace goto which is fast and very optimal way to reach your variables.

Frederik Posts: 23 Rating: (1)	I worked only on one project using the portal so I have not developed all the tricks yet to be efficient. It does not help that all the shortcuts with the F keys have changed(NC contact, NO contact, box, new network, new branch etc, and Ctrl-Tab does not work) I too would like to know how to get similar operation to the Go to -> Location found in Step7. I use this functionality all the time, litteraly,to find my way through a program. I hit Ctrl-Alt-Q on any item, the Go To form pops and I put in the any address I need to look out. Often this address comes from anopened VAT I am using for diagnostics of the specific issue I am looking at.In 1 or 2 seconds I have all the information needed. I agree in the Portal it is cumbersome in comparison to go to the specific DB, navigate inside it to find the reference (sometimes buried deep in structures or large DB) and do this multiple times. I guess the useof theGo To feature isa matter of preference of how to use Step7, but I feel it isa very efficient wayof finding what you need, Thefact you can also sort by access type bysimply clicking the header, and get the writes or reads first is alsonice. Iwould be interested to hear further commentsfrom other people using Go To extensively, typing addresses directly. What is the best alternative/workaround you ended up using to get a similar result? Anchobi Posts: 139 Rating: (25)	Ironically I found that the WinCC tag tables were more useful for cross referencing back to the S7 program than using the individual DB cross reference list or the DB itself (which cant be used). i.e. using the Info/cross reference tab i click on the Wincc tag in a floating table and i get all uses of the tag in step 7 and Wincc.

Is this the same for everyone else or is what Huggy_d1 says is true, that im supposed to see a drill down menu in the cross reference list? I dont get cross references for structures in the DB cross reference list or from the DB table. See attached image of a S7-1200 program using SP2 Upd2. Frederik Posts: 23 Rating: (1)	I have the same behavior, that is cross reference of elements inside a structure are not accessible from the DB cross reference (right-click on data block in the project tree, Cross-References, browse to a structure item). You cannot go deeper than the structure name there. There is no black triangle to expand the structure. If I use an element of the structure in a network and select it, then I can see the references for this item in the bottom cross-reference window. But having to find where is an item is before seeing its references is not that good when what you are trying to doisto find where the item is used.

I have many fc and db , before I set password the cross reference works fine, however, after setting password protect , the cross reference is disappear. Also, I need to complain, the password protection is too cumbersome, I used to split program into many fc, so I need password to potect each FC. But when I need to re-compile all blocks, I have to enter password and open all FC, DB....one by one. Why not just enter password one time or design a password level to access protection block.......
