I would like to understand of the upm libraries (from the https://github.com/eclipse/upm/blob/master/docs/installing.md) are by default installed on the iot2050 box? 

If not; would it be safe to install the library based on the instruction provided at the above link? Can this result in some kind of conflict with the existing mraa library installed on the device (pre installed on the device using the example image)?

I am basically trying to access a ADS1115 for analog to digital conversion; the device communicates using the I2C  protocol, I don't want to reinvent the wheel of understanding the device's communication protocol to configure and read data from it.

Any ideas?

We do not have UPM on the example image pre-installed (in contrast to the IOT2040 image) but we have a fairly recent version of mraa (and even latest one with the upcoming image), so adding UPM yourself should not be an issue.

If you see a reason that UPM should be pre-instaledl, please open an issue on https://github.com/siemens/meta-iot2050/issues. That could be considered for the next-but-one image release.

Thanks Jan for the response, as you suggested I did build the upm package manually and succeeded in accessing the ADS1115 sensor using the built in examples.

I would just jot down the steps I took in case it turns out helpful for someone else trying to do the same thing

Attempt 1:

Install the existing packages for Ubuntu using apt install, this step required me to add a Personal Package Archive (PPA),

# add the add-apt-repository command (see below)

  looks like command failed to add the PPA source, so, rather than solving this problem I decided to manually build the upm package, and this turned out pretty ok. 

Attempt 2: Manually build the package

- install git (skip this step if you already have git installed) 

- clone the upm git repo

git clone https://github.com/eclipse/upm.git
