Recently we had issues operating one of our HMI panels. It worked fine until it suddenly stopped transfering data to and from the PLC. I checked the error messages and it told me the PLC program was protected. I went under Protection & Security > Access level and the PLC had selected "No access (complete protection)".

Is this a known problem or has this occured before to anyone else? I thought maybe loss of power or connection to the HMI could be a possible explanation but im only guessing. Changing the setting back to "Full access (no protection) was easy so the HMI panel is fully operating again.

Would love if you shared your thoughts and experiences on this issue.

How many of the password fields are filled in? Please take a screenshot of the "Access level" section.

Assuming you are the owner of the program ans the screenshot that you shared is what is actually loaded into the S7-1200...

Take a good quality Ethernet cable and connect the HMI and PLC directly to each other.

Please show us in a picture where the error message appears.

Check HMI connection in HMI program and give password as same provided with PLC if any. 

Also check with communication load setting kept in PLC if communication is working ok for some time and then having issue.

The error message just explained that it couldnt transfer data beacuse it was in complete protection, not why it did go into complete protection. What i am asking is why the PLC could automatically do such a change in the settings by itself, if there are some preconditions. All signals and cables are tested, so we have ruled out that possibility.

The PLC will not do it on its own. A very special user program can do it, but this is not the case as you have full control of the program. Password that must come from the HMI is a very deliberate action.

I have seen service being denied to the PC by the PLC because of a bad quality cable. The message was similar to yours.

When communicating through a switch, delay in service or block in service may deliver such cases. Worse if there are partners on the network that has the same address. If your PC is set to automatically select an IP address, you will have problems.

 Hello, I met the same problem. When I set the protection level of the PLC to No Access ( complete protection), then the HMI lost the connection to the PLC. How to do as you said "Check HMI connection in HMI program and give password as same provided with PLC if any"
