Connect TP170A to S5 PLC by S5 programming cable ???

jirimatus Posts: 53 Rating: (2)	Hi, I am replacing old (CRT !) operator panel WS400/20 at Simatic S5 machine by TP 170A panel. But how to connecet the TP panel to S5 PLC? It is 943 CPU with one unused sinec port (marked PG) and there is no profibus CP card. At the TP panel, there is one RS485 and one RS232 connector. On the internet I found some solutions with special expensive cable with 232/TTY converter : TP RS232 - 9pin <--> 9pin reductor 25 pin <--> 25 pin -- 232/TTY adater -- 15pin <--> 15pin PLC. ( http://support.automation.siemens.com/WW/view/en/21923974 ). But for programming S5 I use the same thing = 232/TTY adapter BUT with 9 pin connector on the PC side (no reduction 25/9). So I tried to connect TP170 to PLC by this cable and it seems to work. I can read / write the DataBlocks, I/Os and merkers. Do you think, there could be some problem? Because I googled a lot but I never found the solution with programming cable, so maybe its not 100% OK... I just want to be sure. Thank you very much for responses. J. PS: I dont have scheme of my cable.

The S5 programming cable for a PC is called 6ES5 734-1BD20, it has a 15 pin at PLC side and 25 pin at PC side. (So you need a convertor 25 pin <-> 9 pin) When you look at mentioned link: http://support.automation.siemens.com/WW/view/en/21923974 You can find the order number of the S5 programming cable. jirimatus Posts: 53 Rating: (2)	OK, the cable 6ES5 734-1BD20 is also PROGRAMMING cable (its not mentioned there) ... great... so my (noname&cheap) programming cable has just the "reduction" to 9 pin somewhere inside. Thanks for answer. Now I can use it without bad feeling :-).
